and plastic claws..... it get's even worse.

taking away a cats claws or it's ability to use them is like removing the fangs from a spider.

in experience, our cats have never scratched the furniture, only our door mats.

Soft paws are most definitely not worse. From what I've read, the cat really doesn't notice. And, they will be a training aid, to protect the things we don't want destroyed until he has learned what to, and what not to, scratch.

the soft paws still allow the cat to get a natural grip. if the cat got outdoors, it would still be able to climb trees and such without problem. claw caps may not be entirely natural, but its better than cutting off their fingertips.

Oh, and you can put double sided tape on furniture where cats would scratch, they don't like the sticky, so it deters them from scratching.

Doesn't always work. I had a cat that would stand just out of range of the squirt bottle and misbehave. Than my boyfriend and I started wearing rubberbands as bracelets and rubberbanding the cat from across the room when she was bad. She never could figure out how the rubberband hurt her or where it came from.....but she stopped trying to scratch the couch.
Heck that just sounds like fun with the rubber bands

My cat wasn't declawed but I was still annoyed with the scratches so I asked my veterinarian and they had a procedure in which the muscle the claws are attached to, are disabled.
I believe it's where they use a laser to immobilize the muscles that detract the claws. While it is more humane than declawing and virtually painless it is still a new and expensive procedure and many can't afford the price tag attached.

Soft Claws is an inexpensive way and less permanent. At first kitty won't like it and jump around a bit but after an hour or two they don't even know it's there. The glue is advertised to hold for 6 weeks but mine averaged around around 3 due to my actively scratching kitty. :}
