I know of one guy that kept them: he was a psychotic killer that skinned people, you cannot get in touch with him since he was killed by an agent named Clarice.

Or was this from a movie...? :D

I'm thinking that they're Asian in origin. This makes them one of the many bugs that the USDA requires a permit to keep, because the larva feed on plants and they're considered a "potential plant pest". That doesn't mean that there aren't people out there keeping them, but they're probably doing it underground and aren't likley to post about it on a public forum. The permits, by the way, are next to impossible to get unless you run a zoo, museum, etc.

I have heard they are hard to breed in captivity, and difficult to obtain in the wild. They have a long hard probuscus (SP?) that can be used in self defense.
