some possibilities: could be CITES listed, in which case the only available animals would be captive-bred or illegal (most likely illegal wild-caughts)

or, they could be very small, or hard to keep alive in captivity.

if one of the fine arachnid sellers on the site isn't carrying them, its likely they either fit into one of the two above categories, or there hasnt been any interest in them so far. there's a whole lot of T species in the world!

good luck, and keep us up to date!

I've looked around too, but haven't found any yet. Perhaps if enough hobbyists start asking dealers for them, they could get some imported. Or you could see if you can get them from Europe.

CITES listed or not they're all from Brazil, Brazil has been closed for years. I've seen sporadic pics of some of them in private collections but I've never seen any listed for sale but would be all over them if I did. Not only are they beautiful, they're so tiny and I'm starting to develop a liking for the dwarf species of Ts.

If they are in Europe, it would be a shame if some enterprising dealer didn't get them in at some point.

EDIT: I'm talking about Cyriocosmus in general, not necessarily those two species.

There are not doubts that Cyriocosmus spp. are gorgeous little spiders.

Cyriocosmus spp. are not CITES.

You find species in different countries in South America.

C. elegans is "common" on Trinidad Island, which does not forbid exports... you also find them in Venezuela (on Isla Margarita for sure).

C. elegans is present in Europe in the hobby, in fact it has been for "long time" and is captive bread.

C. leetzi is also in the hobby, but I think that everyone who has females are looking for males, and they are no where to be found I think... this species comes from Colombia, so no real chances of getting them...

According to what I know, C. ritae has also been present in the hobby, but I do not know if anyone still has any... probably in one guy's (or girl's) basement somewhere...

For exemple captive bred C. leetzi will generally have a body lenght of 2cm and a legspan of about 4cm. So you can imagine that the spiderlings are EXTREMELY SMALL and you need equally extremely small prey items to get them started. If you supply the right size, I have been told they are not too hard to start. But that is the main reason not much importers will bother getting them in the US. Since they are time consuming, they are not money wise!

I hope this helps a little

After checking out a photo of these little beauties, I can live with getting my hands on one of them, instead.

Does anyone know of these in the US? Again, it's not one I see on many pricelists.

krucz36,

The site you have posted the link to is more or less France's equivalence to the ATS site. So it explains why there are no prices!LOL

For those who read french, it is an amazing site and you can get the original description of C. leetzi made by Fabian Vol (with exact location of it's origin in Colombia).

As krucz36 said, for those who do not read french, you can still appreciate the nice pictures working your way through the latin names.

For "TheEternal", if there are any Cyriocosmus spp. left in the US, I would believe that those lucky "owners" would keep those rare jewels.

When I referred to C. ritae in my previous post, I know for sure they were present in the US! (just to make everyone drool even more...). According to the person who had them, on the 20 or so specimens that he tried raising only a bunch (3 or 4) made it to decent size but they are now dead...sigh...

The thing with those "more obscur" species is that the breeders that work with them usually do not have much more species to offer, so, again, on the monatery side of it, not many people are willing to import one or two species... only collectors will, and they usually import for their personnal "little zoos", not to resale them...

The other problem is that it seems not a lot of hobbyists appreciate the marvel of dwarf species. The demand is more for big impressive (in size) animals... too bad, but I am hoping that there are now a few more enthusiasts that are desparate for Cyriocosmus spp.

Take care

well, i've got a few emails going, and hopefully someone may be stopping in the states sooner or later. if they are not CITES listed animals, as per martin's info, and they are found outside of Columbia and Brazil, we may be in luck. it only takes a couple good sacs for everyone to start saying "pff! whatever! ANOTHER leetzi? ho hum". i remember when getting a redknee was a big deal!

not that they don't rock.
