my daughter and I caught him and gave him a leaf hopper to munch on. They are my favorite spiders besides tarantulas. I know these are common but not sure if anyone can identify him. He has pretty chelicerae :)

Just wait for crpy and jeff h to get in this thread and start arguing about what it is. Chances are crpy will be correct. :}

It might be too young to tell, but aren't P. Audax's chelicerae metallic green?
That spider has it blue, it could be a morph.. or a different species. My money's on it being at least a Phidippus though..

It's def a penultimate P. audax, with the blue chelicerae morph. Can't tell if it's a boy or a girl from the photo, though.

I wish I could get my hands on another blue chelicerae male..:wall:

Agreed, the color varies so on audax. Have you seen P. clarus up there as well? They have blue chelicera but the setae is dif on tibia

Come to think of it, I believe I saw a P. clarus once up here. My then-boyfriend pulled up in my driveway one early evening, and was taking forever to come to the door. I went out to see what he was doing. He was trying to tear off the inner panel of his truck door for some reason. I was like, "WTF??"

He nervously explained that he had seen a HUGE spider crawl in there through the slot where the window glass fits in, while driving over. So he was taking apart his truck door. I said to him, "Just slam the door a bunch of times, and it will fall out the bottom!" and he was like, "NOOO! It won't come out, and it's gonna jump on me while I'm driving, I just KNOW it!"

I FINALLY got him to calm down, and we opened and closed the door about 50 times, and slammed it super hard each time. Then, we got in the truck and proceeded to head off to the restaurant for supper. He kept saying, "I know it's still in there, and it's gonna crawl out and jump on me!"

Well, wouldn't you know it..I swear jumpers have the dickens in them, and a wicked sense of humour, because this one damn near killed us. We got about three miles down the road, and as I turned to say something to him, I watched that spider come tip-toeing out of the door panel, hop onto the steering wheel, and bloop! right onto his thigh. At that moment, he saw it, too. We went cattywompus off the road and onto the shoulder. He just about tore the seatbelt off to get out of the truck. He went running down the road like Ol' Scratch was on his heels-- screaming like a little girl, and tearing off articles of clothing. I'm assuming the spider got flung off on the roadside someplace.

The spider was the most colourful one I've seen here, so I remember it quite well. Knowing what I know now, I'm pretty sure it was a large female P. clarus.
