Coconut hidings...

Hi!
I was wondering, i see coconut mixed soil, coconut chirps, etc around here, even some coconut hidings for tarantulas, so, why not build one? i just went to the market, got a medium size green coconut and drinked it all (refreshing!) now after cleaning it and getting the "important part" out, i cut it in a half, cut the "entrance" on one side... and that's it, instant tarantula housing now, if somebody knows, how much time should i let it dry? i was thinking about some "microwave drying" but i'm not sure... any extra-treatment or info about coco-houses? i guess tarantulas are not "allergic" or something to coconut...

Some people say there's problems with mold with coconut hides, but I use one for my seemanni and it's great.

Actually i did search for "coconut" + housing and hidings but nothing came across... i'll search more.

Umm, mold ah? maybe too wet...

Yeah probably, but if they're used with dry species it'll be fine. I keep my seemanni cage dry.

It is already in the process of drying... i managed to get an electric fan (from a computer power supply) to blow air at them (i made two since i split the coconut in half)... tomorrow if there's good weather here i'll put them at sunlight all morning and probably will finish the drying at the microwave oven i'll get pictures soon but it looks just like an splitted coconut

We use it in all our enclosures, have been for years.
If you get mold, its a sure sign you have too much humidity w/o adequate ventilation.

i've had a hand crafted half-a-coconut hide for my G.rosea for about 3 or 4 months now (bought the coconut for $1... nice) and i've had no problems with it. granted it *is* a G.rosea so it's quite dry in the cage (except when Scary Mary dumps her water dish out)

somehow coconut mold very very easily and i dont know why.. i even baked it and put it in th microwave to totally dry it up, but within few days when i checked, it was molding like mad, thank goodness my T didnt die~ juz be careful using coconut

I've tried twice

Hi guys,
It's been a long time since this threat was initially opened. On the other hand, I still feel like sharing what happened to me.
I have a scorpion, and emperor, and was committed to give him the room it deserves.
First I tried to make a coconut-home with a half I got. I pealed it and got the "important, hard-part". Then I placed it in the yard where it could get some sun and get firm, hard, dry, and nice: FAIL!!! This did NOT happen. It looked like a smashed orange, so fragile.
Second try: I bought it from the supermarket, it was the whole coconut but already pealed this time (the "important, hard-part" only). I could hear the water inside of it.
I didn't cut it in halves this time; I just took a small piece off to get to the water and drink it (Refreshing!!!, someone stated It already). I didn't remove the delicious flesh from the inside; neither place it to get dry under the sun... The result? a perfect home my emperor loves.

Reminder here. Emperors subsist in high-humidity conditions. I don't know what my coconut almost wet would carry out to a Tarantula that is designed to live in much dryer conditions.

Please let me know whether anyboy has tried some different!

ive used coconut hidings in my lividum and my emperor cages and never ever had any problems with mold or anything weird.

All of my Ts stay in coconut hiding for many years.
and has no problem at all.

btw, i make the coconut hiding by myself.

i have one in my E. Murinus's enclosure she whent in it once or twice then webed it over never have any problems with mold though and her enclosure is pretty humid ..
