So, I've been cleaning out all cages etc today and was buying some new orchid bark for my hissing cockroaches and saw some sphagnum moss and was wondering if you could use that with cockroaches. It also says on the bag clean prior to use, why would that be?
Thanks

I believe the cleaning is precautionary because it’s harvested without a lot of processing in some cases, but I’ve never had issues with it and I’ve kept roaches with it, and bought roaches from roach crossing kept with the moss. I would say rinse once and it’ll be fine.

Rinsing it should be fine. Expect them to munch on it if they get hungry. Just make sure there aren't any weird additives with it.

Lol I won't! They did something similar when I tried giving them spare fishflakes; they went mad for it!

Fishflakes are actually the staple of some of my smaller colonies and I'll throw some to my larger colonies on occasion. Difference brands seem to get different reactions, but I've wondered too if the type of fish food matters: flake or pellet. Probably makes a difference depending on who can grab it, but nutritionally it's probably all about the same.

Yeah, they get a mixture of bug grub for feeder insects and fish flakes sprinkled around when the substrate gets cleaned.
