Im not overly worries as yet but, ive had my chilli rose tarantula 17months now and 'he' hasn't shed yet. is this normal? sorry if my question is daft but ive searched for answers elsewhere with no joy, the petshop informed me he was 9 weeks old when purchased, although i realize this may be far from the truth. thanks in advance for any help. its much appreciated.

You're welcome. The petstore was wrong about the age. This species takes years to reach adulthood. In their defence they may have meant it molted 9 weeks before you purchased it which would seem more plausible. Assuming you don't have a mature male, your T will molt when it's ready. I've had a rosea go nearly three years between molts!

Good luck.

How large is the tarantula? Species of the genus Grammostola don't molt much, especially once they reach adulthood.

My female G. Rosea was close to maturity when I got her 13 years ago. She has only molted 3 or 4 times in 13 years. Her last molt was summer 2010. My G. Pulchripes, which I purchased spring 2011, has not molted once in my care. Gramostolas are so easy, they confuse people.

Rosies do what Rosies do.

One of mine recently went from 3 to 4 inches while fasting for 6 months. Go figure.

Take it this way and i'm sure you already know your G,Rosea isn't 9 weeks, mine is 7" and only got her 1.5 years ago, molted once 6 months ago, now that puts her in the WC--(wild caught) category, minimum age of 11-14 years before i got her, pet shops know almost nothing when it comes to T's/especially G,Rosea as they have long lives and have been brought up in many different environments before the pet traid, that said as long is your T is in a good home then thing's should be fine, they adapt quite well.

Are you a newbie? Actually, it doesn't matter. Even experienced aficionados can sometimes benefit from a little review.

Save yourself a lot of stress, work, expense, and maybe even a few dead tarantulas. Go to the Spiders, Calgary webtree and start reading. At least scan through the entire website, picking out topics that catch your attention.

DO NOT FAIL TO READ STAN'S NEWBIE INTRODUCTION!

DO NOT FAIL TO READ THE FOUR BOOKS RECOMMENDED IN STAN'S RANT!

DO NOT FAIL TO READ THE ENTIRE MYTH WEBTREE!

ESPECIALLY, READ CARE SHEETS: THE MOTHER OF ALL MYTHS.

ESPECIALLY, READ GROWING YOUR OWN.

ESPECIALLY, READ TEMPERATURE.

ESPECIALLY, READ RELATIVE HUMIDITY.

ESPECIALLY, READ CARE AND HUSBANDRY OF THE CHILEAN ROSE TARANTULA.

And, I strongly suggest you scan through SUBSTRATE.

The best news is that 90% of the questions you wanted to ask plus a lot, LOT more that you didn't think to ask are all laid out for you for ABSOLUTELY FREE if you read that website and take advantage of your friendly, neighborhood, public library! All you need do is read.

There is a caveat, however. My late wife, Marguerite and I have literally spent decades selling tarantulas to all sorts of people of all ages and from all walks of life. We've massaged and reworked the care suggestions in those webpages and one of those books to make them just about as bullet proof as they can get for novices. Follow the instructions carefully, and ask us before you start experimenting with anything new.

But, those instructions are not necessarily the only ones that will work, and maybe not even the best ones available. (The hobby is still new and very much in a state of development. We're still discovering and inventing new things about tarantulas almost daily.) Through our experience we only know that those instructions are pretty much bullet proof for novices. After you've had one or more tarantulas for a year or better you can start experimenting with the tricks and techniques of other enthusiasts. Just don't do that yet. FIRST, learn the basics of tarantula care. THEN start experimenting on your own.

Chilean roses have gained a reputation for being very "irregular" in all their cyclical activities. It's no lie that they seem to always march to a different drummer than any other tarantula. Or no drummer at all!

Even after a Chilean rose completes its Hemisphere Shift (You've got to read CARE AND HUSBANDRY OF THE CHILEAN ROSE TARANTULA!), it will stop eating for extended periods as well as skip expected molts from time to time. The record skips seem to be a few weeks longer than 3 years for fasting, and something on the order of 5 years for molting. However, ordinarily they only fast for perhaps 2 years and fail to molt every second year. Sometimes. Maybe. If you hold your tongue just right. Unless it rains. Hopefully.

Best of luck. Hope this helps.

Tarantulas think it's SSSOOOooo funny!

...watching you freak out like that!
