Meta ovalis from cave entrance in southern Indiana. I have old spider books, but I believe this now belongs to the long-jawed orb weavers family Tetragnathidae. It is also called Meta menardii in my books. Is this the same species?

Yes Meta belongs to the Tetragnathidae today. Meta ovalis used to be considered a synonym of Meta menardi, but is now a separate species. Meta menardi is absent from USA.
