Aren't they cool?

There are 2 stages in the pic. I've seen the two stages represented here referred to as 1st and 2nd instar or as second stage nymphs and 1st instar. Last I heard, there was some debate on the correct terminology.

It was really nice meeting you at the show last month and I am looking forward to this month's show as well. :)

Nice pics :) Cute little guys that get fiesty and brown lol.

I don't think there should be any debate though. They should be refered to as 1st and 2nd instar IMO.

Egg > Postembryo > (then the first true molt) 1st instar

Dr. Breene gives a pretty nice overview HERE

I agree, but I wanted to make sure that I acknowledged that there at least used to be some debate out there. Trying to cover as many bases as possible. Thanks for the link, BTW.

I'm still a little bit confuzzled on the instar issue. In that pic, the black ones are 1st instar, and the blue ones 2nd instar? Or the black ones 2nd, and the blue ones 3rd, making l'eggs 1st istar?

The way I understand it, and the way it is explained by Breene in this link that Eric provided, is that the "eggs with legs" stage is called postembryo. The next stage (the black ones in the above photo) is first instar. The stage after first instar would be second instar, which are the blue ones above.

Me and everyone around here refers to them as egg, nymph1, nymph2, 1st instar. This is probably because most of the T's keep nymph1 and nymph2 in eggsack, so true 1st instar in when spider comes out of eggsack ..

Many people call them many things, which is fine on a hobbyist level. However, IMO the term "nymph" should not be applied to spiders at all.

The first "true molt" occurs when postembryo sheds into the 1st instar. Just because this stage is still relying on yolk from the mother, and not feeding itself, does not make it something other than an "instar"... nor does still being in the eggsac itself.
