case and point. this stand off lasted for an hour. neither moved, neither showed any interest.

the male is very, very nervous. just getting him over to her cage was a spastic battle.

anyone selling spider pheromones? :8o

PS- he's not THAT big compared to her. he's on the top of a slope, she's at the bottom. their carapaces are the same size.

She's probably not mature enough. I had a young female Carlsbad Green that wasn't quite old enough, and the results were similar, the male and female were just in a standoff.

She molted, was put with another male, and presto, they mated.

Interesting because I have a 5" A. metallica which runs from my male, and he doesn't drum to her or anything. Half the time he's not interested or he'll chase her.

You had mentioned you had several females--I was going to suggest trying a different one. Another thought--have you seen him make a sperm web yet? I've found most of my males aren't ready for the first month after they've molted.

he's had about a month. i do plan on trying him with my other freshly molted female this weekend to see if the response is different. the female is full grown though :(

i have not witnessed a sperm web, but i saw excessive webbing in his hide (these guys are notorious for webbing up a thick mat) and so couldn't distinguish what's normal webbing and what's sperm web. he also won't eat, so i'm trying to get him breeding before he starves himself.

I hope it works out for you, it's a great species. That's a stunning male you have there. I don't know why that little teenybopper doesn't jump all over him.

Wait, let me rephrase that...

how so?

i've tried my best to "stimulate" a sperm web. i placed his cage next to their two females' cages. i even left one of their molts in his cage in hopes of encouraging him.

trust me, i'm not trying to risk this male. they're too rare. both girls are well fed. the problem seems to be their skittish demeanor. :(

In my experience with breeding this specie before about a year ago, But to much planning was unsuccessful. The female buried the sac In her substrate not sure why but I have heard that this specie is known for doing that. I just didn't catch it in time. Also watch out when you do get a receptive female the pairing can get very violent....A little somthing that worked for me was try shark tanking the MM in her enclosure that will stimulate him to make a sperm web.. I would love to see someone produce CBB of this specie.

I hope this will help you out.

Good luck :D

i actually haven't tried him yet. i'm going to tonight. decided to hold off, in case he hadn't made a sperm web yet and the first encounter got him in the mood.

i expect this encounter will yield either absolutely nothing or complete chaos.

Maybe its the wrong time of the month?{D
According to Steven B. Reichling, the C. lamanai found in the wild--mature males are found wandering between late June to late September. The females are found gravid in January and February and will lay their eggs in March. After March, no gravid females were found. So, it seems right now is the perfect time...

One thing I've done (not with C. labanai but with brachys) is give them a little 'help' by nudging them with a soft paintbrush. Once they find each other, it tends to get more exciting pretty quickly. I have had rose hairs do the standoff thing for hours and once I nudge them close enough, they take care of it themselves.

Good luck with them!

i actually tried a little nudging on the first attempt. it causes the male to go totally spastic. the female also responded by sprinting.

unfortunately, this species is very skiddish. once they're within 6" of each other, i can only leave them alone until they either decide to mate or leave. the slightest "prodding" would probably cause one to bolt away or run smack into the other (which would probably end very badly).

Thanks for the update! Now that he's hooked up, maybe if/when you get him back things will be different.
