I'm finding brown widows all over my house and spiky egg sacs everywhere. Anybody know much about the venom of these and if people are willnig to buy them because I have about 20 loose in my room that I am slowly capturing.

I walk into my bathroom and notice a new web. Fatty Latrodectus geometricus with two eggs and about 1000 babies crawling all over the web. X_X I'm going to leave them alone till tomarrow and see if they are still there and capture them. So far I have 4 widows in deli cups and a mother with 5 eggs in a large cup.

BTW anybody know about the venom from these things. Is it as bad as a black widow? Heard from a few sources it was not as powerful and somebody else said it was worst so I have no clue.

Im not to sure on potency of the venom, but I too have heard its a more mild bite than the Southern black widow. I may be wrong though, let someone more knowledgable answer that. Sounds like a real problem though. Do you have any younger children or small pets?, like a dog or cat?

Two cats and a dog. I'm 17 and healthy so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need to goto the hospital over it if I got bitten. My uncle was bitten a few years ago by a southern and it was pretty bad but he was fine after a few days in the tub full of hot water. I guesst heat helps he said it did for him anyways. This sort of concerns me about my pets because these widows are everywhere. Mostly out on the patio but a few have ventured into the laundry room and bathroom by the back of the house. Just a few hours ago I went tot ake the trash out and as I was walking through the garage I walekd right into a web and sure enough it was a brown widow. Landed on ym neck then it freaked out and just curled into a ball and fell to the floor and I captured it in a deli cup. It looks to be male and I found a large female in the doorway at the top corner about a foot away from where his web was.

If its any consolation, they are everywhere around my place and I have 4 cats and 3 dogs. I have seen several people after they were bitten ,including a 2 year boy. All had no ill effects other than a little blistering at the site.

apparently geometricus has a potent venom but a lesser yield, also they are more reluctant to bite.
Blistering at the bite site...makes me think it is not latro bites

Hey Apple man,

On two occasions I saw the spider that did the biting. One bite we took the spider out of the guys shirt. I know it sounds wierd but they were L. geometricus

I believe blistering is actually fairly common for Latros and Steatoda.

I think he likes it {D OR he is just not very careful.. either way if you get tagged alot( not on purpose) maybe you are doing something the wrong way.

Thats what we say in the venomous snake business, lol, if you get tagged , you screwed up. But truth be told spiders are a whole nother critter, easier to get tagged if you mess with them for one reason or another:)

Apple, dont get pissed Im just curious;)

Symptoms of latro bites seem to be very diverse. ..And its hard to really know all the possibilities when it comes to individual human reactions because its hard to trust someone when they say they got tagged by a widow in the 1st place.

Mellow spider, difficult to get bit. I treat geos only a point or 2 above the average "garden" spider when it comes to caution while handling.

Get your flashlight out and spend an hour or 2 one night collecting ...esp the big gravid females. This WILL reduce the population. A few of those females are probably producing an egg sac every week after a good feed.

Well guys I lived in Florida for many years [11] and in my younger days I was rather stupid and willing to take a dare. But of course I have grown up and am very careful now. I keep 6 different lat species and breed them .
The two Goe bites were in Naples from clothes left on the line too long...rained everyday so they stayed there for a bit.
First bite was from a large mactans, on a handling dare ...yeah stupid but I was in my twenty's and bullet proof or so I thought, Nailed me on the back of my hand.

heh heh yeah man...the difference is this ....when more than one told me I listened. Now ...no more squared circle fights or stupid risks.
Life is too short....sometimes I do find myself clenching a fist or two...just no more throwing them
