Most people seem to do 3 at a time.

IMO - No matter what it's always 50/50.
You can buy 10 and have all 10 be male.

I personally don't shoot for females - I'll buy a sexed one if I can afford it but idc what my slings turn out to be.
If I really like a species I'll buy more than one - but only cause I want more of the same.
I do prefer females since they live longer imo. Males are okay but right now I don't plan on breeding tarantulas. Although one day I do want to try breeding.

You can still get up to a decade or more out of males of slow growing species like emilia. If I end up with a male then once he matures I'll sell him to a breeder and then if I want more of that species I'll put the money towards more slings or a sexed female.

Looks like I am going to get either a brachypelma emilia or another hamorii. Do you think I should get slings or just get a female? I don't mind slings and waiting although I do want to see if I can get a female.
I have a Hamorii sling and it has led me to the most stress of all my T’s. Built a burrow and doesn’t come out. I had to open it once to drop a red runner in there and he took it but I try to not make a habit of it. I’ve let it go months at a time in its burrow. It doesn’t come out.

My B. smithi sling was the same way until I transferred it into a deli cup. Then it ate and molted just fine and I just had a much better piece of mind being able to see it. Now I think it's a little under 2" and it's in a 4x4 amac. It has a hide, but it never burrows down anymore.

I just put the slings in deli cups. That way I can observe them and make sure they are eating.
