How do they work? :?

After doing a little searching and looking through the Noob help stickys I came across this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spydawebb/anatomy.html

Now I'm gonna warn you all I am TERRIBLE at biology and all science really but after reading that site it sounds they have little gills under their book lung bald spots and the breeze blows and there is your O2. I'm assuming that It's the breeze blowing because I've seen at least 20 times that their breathing is passive.

If there are these slits where on the exterior of the book lungs are they?

I looked book lungs up on wiki and.......

You've read right that they take in oxygen passively, but they don't need a breeze to breathe. Basically, the book lungs are made up of SUPER thin leaflets of tissue that blood passes through as a part of the circulatory system. The tissue has teeny tiny pores in it that are small enough to let oxygen particles in but not let blood cells out if you want to think of it that way, so as the blood passes through that tissue, the oxygen from the air around the book lung binds to the blood cells and is carried through the body to be used. At least that's my understanding of how they work.

I am very fascinated with this. I had to give a small speach on something I didn't know about and make it sound convincing so i convinced my Creative Writing class tarantulas use their fangs as snorkles. Lmao

Hm I am curious about the H gigas and their swimming experiences. Any theories on them breathing underwater? Is it harder for the T to breathe in tight spaces?

BAAHAHHHAAAA that might be the funniest tarantula related statement I've ever heard! Mind, it's a subject that's typically driven away from humor..

The really funny part is some are know of use their legs as "snorkels" under water.

The other thing is they do not need a lot of Oxygen as long as they are not eating or moving much. I've seen T's raised in sealed jars that were opened every couple weeks for feeding and water. I DON'T recommend this.

Yeah, I'm always astounded by how little oxygen they can get by with too! I've heard of them being shipped in sealed Ziploc bags and they were good in there for four or five days during shipping, I'm sure they would've been fine even longer.

Not something you should really do if you have the choice lol, but it's really cool to know they can do that!

If they have the third edition, read "Respiratory System" on pages 48 and 49.

At the same time, ask the library to order a copy of Ranier Foelix' book, Biology of Spiders through the Interlibrary Loan Service. Look for the section on respiration and respiratory systems. This book has diagrams and photos to help you understand the anatomy and names.

You may also be able to find both of these books in a nearby university library.
