Bizzare question about ozone and tarantulas

I just got some equipment that emits a small amount of ozone. My apartment doesn't have great ventilation (windows don't open so the vents is all the ventilation the place gets) and I'm wondering if I need to be concerned about my animals, if I use it on the other side of the apartment or put their tanks in the closet (or use the equipmeny in the closet) do you think it will be fine? Are arachnids especially sensitive to ozone? I have 3 Ts and a bunch of scorpions

Also before someone says, I'm aware that ozone is harmful to humans. Wondering if it's similarly harmful for arachnids? Unless someone can confirm that it's NOT a concern, I can rent out a place to use the equipment so I don't risk harming my pets, but I would like to be able to use it in my home if possible. It doesn't produce a ton but enough to smell so I'm still concerned

That's a good question, if it hasn't affected you I would assume the spiders would be alright...not sure though. Either way, its always best to err on the side of caution in these cases.

The short answer is ozone has been tested for the potential to kill invertebrate pest species. It does kill them. I don't know if anyone's tested tarantulas specifically, but given it kills everything else, it'd be fair to assume it will.

The longer answer is to remember that ozone works slowly in low concentrations. You're likely not to notice the damage to your lungs because it happens slowly over time. It'll become your new normal. That means you shouldn't take feeling fine as a sign that it's safe for your pets. It'll also likely damage them slowly over time.

Renting out somewhere with good ventilation would be the best all round. It'll reduce your exposure as well as your pets.

Are you talking about the Air purifiers that create O-Zone? My uncle used to sell them. we had one. I dont think they will cause an issue. they only kill bacteria in the air through the uv system they filter through. If thats what your talking about you will be fine.

Ozone's dangers are very unspecific. It does damage by increasing oxidative stress in cells. Since bacteria are small and have a high metabolism they are the first to die. Everything else needs longer, but will still be damaged. In humans ozone increases the risk of lung inflammation and cancer - as @Polenth already stated that's a slow process and when the first symptoms appear it's too late. Since ozone damaging mechanism is so unspecific it will damage the lungs of your tarantulas the same way it damages everything else.

Those ozone "air-purifiers" will decrease bacterial load in the air (completely unnecessary) and may instead increase your cancer risk... not a trade I am ever willing to make.

It's not an air purifier, but a violet wand (potentially NSFW google). I think they may put off more ozone than the air 'purifiers' but I also don't plan on running it for longer than 15-20 minutes at a time. Again, I'm aware that ozone isn't good for you, I'm also aware that violet wands are a quack medical device (I didn't get it for medical purposes ). I'm ok with the risk I'm taking with my own body, I just don't want to hurt my pets. Sounds like I'll just rent a room whenever I want to use it. Thanks for the info!

Oh the things one learns at 2:20 am while innocently browsing an arachnid hobbyist website...

(P.S. I am not judging! I am just amused when aspects of peoples' lives outside shared interests are so vastly different.)

Hahaha :angelic::angelic::angelic: figured you guys would know better than my friends in the... Other... hobby if it was safe to use in the same room as my pets. They're all like "it's fine, don't worry about it!" I'm like... This k!nk might be worth risking cancer but it's not worth killing all my T's

I'm so confused what this thing is. I'm pretty sure i've seen one being used in some "specialist" internet clips that I happened upon after going down a wild rabbit hole... Have I got the right idea? No judgement here

Edit: just seen the above post.

Didn't you know it works wonders on knots in your shoulders and stuff :angelic:

I think unless you use it for hours every day (which isn't recommended anyways) it doesn't have to be harmful. I thought those things worked with static electricity though... Or are there new and improved wands?

Wow I'm late on the response to this! :shy::shy: There are e-stim tools you can get that use static electricity, but they aren't violet wands. A legit violet wand is designed to create a continuous stream of direct current, the tubes are usually filled argon, neon, or some other conductive gas. You can get a lot more kick out of them than something that just uses static electricity, but they're still safe.

In case anyone is curious, I moved somewhere with more ventilation.... My Ts seemed fine at my old place but I barely used it there anyways :drunk::drunk: Didn't wanna hurt em. Glad I can let my hair down now
