A bunch of people use Poland Spring water bottle caps which are very shallow and dry out easily.

Others use tattoo ink caps, including myself in some instances. They work nice for very small slings.

I find the best style water bottle cap is the one pictured. You can find these at Walmart in the drinks section for 78 cents each. While they do seem expensive, they do a really nice job of staying full.

I have witnessed 0.5" slings drinking from these dishes with no issue.

All our bottle caps used to be like that, now to help recycle they are attached to the bottle, still useable with a little trimming but there not as deep as they used to be like those ones. 1737572284374200980552329220507.jpg

Yeah I hate these new designs. I went to Morocco two weeks ago and they had the proper ones like original ones. Hopefully they don’t start doing this rubbish ones with milk tops here in the UK soon too 🤯

Those look good too!
Yeah Im just gutted they changed them though there about 2mm shallower than the old ones I know it's not much but can be the difference of a day or so. How dare they try and save the planet with recycling, no consideration for us T keepers lol. I'm not sure if England are the same but here in Scotland all the bootles are like that now, very rare to find bottles with the good caps.

Yeah they will be getting done too I'm guessing, when I'm at work I just cut the lids off with a Stanley they do my nut in

Hobby Lobby here in the US has some great, little clear acrylic containers for jewelry and beads that make really good water dishes. They're cheap, come in a variety of sizes, and I like the fact that they're clear so you can see the water level or if they need cleaning very easily. You can also use both the top and bottoms of them.

They even have big ones that are large enough for most of my largest enclosures:

I wouldn't let this secret out if I didn't feel like I was well enough stocked up on these - next thing you know Hobby Lobby is going to have a run on them... LOL.

Do you know how man mL of water fit in each of the 3 sizes? I don’t have HL, but may be interested in ordering.

The smallest size holds roughly 8mL, the medium size holds roughly 12mL, and the larger ones will hold roughly 30mL (40mm size), 40mL (50mm size), and 140mL (70mm size).

Key word in all that is "roughly"! 😆

These hold about 8mL, too, but are shorter and have a larger diameter (and are my favorite option for sling & juvenile enclosures):

any kind of bottle cap really, or jar lids made from the same kind of food grade plastic

i used to collect milk bottle caps, since they were white, so any dirt/grime or discolouration of the water is easier to spot

sadly the new EU regulations mean they no longer sell those. i do have quite a few though, so i just wash and reuse them continously

for larger spiders nutella° lids fill the same niche

other colours can make it harder to spot if the water goes nasty, but they work just as well

Thanks!! I always go with less surface area to minimize evap. I hate watering frequently

I 3D printed a lot of bowls for my slings. If you are able to get use of one, I would recommend that. The good thing about 3d printing also, is that you can change the size to suit your needs. 469548091_10161453597351777_546710462696027972_n.jpg

I did the lego thing with tiny slings. Moved from two dots to four as they molted.

now i use basic white bottle caps that come from soy milk containers: everyone is grown over 1inch 3/4 D00025B3-F660-4E00-8261-AD87BEACCB1F.jpeg

the best water dish is the one you find for free that fits carapace size.

the end.

I'd like to print little food/water bowls for crickets. The bowls would have integral ramps that the crickets could climb. I drew the ramp on the wrong side. The right angle fits into the corner of the enclosure, so the ramp needs to be along the rounded side.

I put a shallow cap in there, but the water evaporates in less than 24 hours. I guess it will do for now.

Rocks.

as much as they are considered nonos, these work if you put the time to clean them.

cricket breeders use them. Its just more effort and time to clean. But it can be free.

I'm concerned about ever using something bigger than my sling after seeing pics of one drowned in a bottlecap. Someone else on here trims down pill blister packs and uses the individual little 'cups' for each pill for the slings, so I copied that (careful to get rid of any sharp edges) and it worked a treat!

You must have very tiny slings?

Even if it happens, tarantulas have hairs. Ever get water on them? It purls.

How small are these slings that legos wont do it?

So, I do not own any LEGO. I do, however, own pills, so it was the easier option :D This is for slings too small for bottlecaps specifically, yeah. It might pearl, but they CAN drown in the bottlecaps when very tiny so the blister pill pack, much much smaller, was a safer choice... and one that fit into the sling vial.
