We don't have crickets outside here and one of the things I miss from when I lived in the South is hearing crickets chirping at night. Imagine my disappointment when I ended up with a "pet" male silent cricket because none of my inverts had the slightest interest in eating him. I had him until he died a natural death and though I could see him trying his best he barely made a sound :(

Going back to the smell, a while ago I saw some guys from a company that breeds feeder animals selling some kind of odor control powder that you put in the crickets enclosure and it's supposed to make the smell actually bearable. Personally I haven't tried it, but it might be something to look into.

Ya screw crickets. The only time I get them is if I know I'm going to feed them off. Too darn noisey and smelly for me.

Sorry for my ignorance.. But who is/are the singer :D ?
Besides clipping the male's wings, you may want to clip the ovipositor (the long tube-looking thing) off the females. If your spider doesn't eat those right away they may lay eggs in the substrate and you end up with a bunch of pinheads in your spider's tank.

In my case, crickets and roaches are all my pokie will eat. It's much easier to get crickets. Even the few pet stores that do roaches are always yelling about their colony dying out and refusing to sell small ones even after I show them pictures of my T.

They are rapidly annoying me however. I will probably get some Dubai roaches or lats from Jamie's and call it a day, probably less of a threat as well.

My LPS only sells crickets and locusts so I purchased a starter colony of red runners (150-odd mixed size for about £10 posted) from eBay nearly a year ago, I ended up selling enough to start a colony to someone on FB recently because I have more than I could ever hope to use.

Can those survive if they escape and infect your condo and neighbors etc?
Only if you live somewhere hot and humid enough for them to breed (I think keeping them is illegal in some states), I live on an almost perpetually cold/wet island so I'm good.

I accidentally found out that they stop producing oothecae if temps drop to around 22C or lower and any escapees tend to die off pretty quickly here (I've found random dead males that have escaped, one was in my corn snake vivarium).

Males are the only ones that tend to escape anyway IME.

My solution to annoying crickets is easy.. I turn off my hearing aids. Problem solved! It also works for annoying kids, racist grandparents, whatever has been beeping in the basement for the last 14 months, and the neighbors tiny barking dogs.

I think I got the best solution... I start to keep them close to the window that I keep always a bit open.. Since that moment I didn't hear them anymore... :D You know if the cold will kill them ?

Hi guys! I got small problem/question that Iwould like to ask if anyone had same experience as mine...

I bought a medium size brown/silent cricket pack month ago to feed my Juvenile Gbb... was completly fine the silent part of them but recently my Gbb went in premolt, approx 2 weeks ago, since then she refuse meal and just bein passive in her den... now few medium cricket are growing and grow some wings which they use to chirp, Is not loud and is not constant but is just annoying sound...
I catch few of them and cut of the end part of the wing to stop them to chirp... Is that something better I could do? I feel bit bad but I don't know if there is anything else I can do to keep them completly quite as they were before... I wish I could give them to my GBB but as I say she/he seems in premolt so I would like to know if someone has a better solution to keep them silent
Feed the males first. Only the males chirp. Or switch to superworms like I did.

I think I got the best solution... I start to keep them close to the window that I keep always a bit open.. Since that moment I didn't hear them anymore... you know if the cold will kill them ?
If it gets too cold then yes

Don't let them grow cold and feed them after! If their metabolism slows down, crickets can become toxic because of the waste building up inside them. Get more spiders. :smug:

That's interesting. Do you have a link to a study on this?
