reptile carpet is a breeding ground for bacteria and your just asking to get scale rott usuing it.

aspin is great for low hummidity species but realy is crap for pythons and boas

sani chips get all over the place and like aspin hold poor humidity

newspapper again.. poor hummidity, but it is cheep and easy to replace.

personal favorit.. coco husk, its what i find to be the best for boas and pythons exept for cost. i cant afford to put it in all my cages.

i use cypress multch.. cheep, looks good, great for hummidity, comes in bulk and is found at most lowes and home depots

That's actually the opposite of my experience, although I do live in a pretty humid part of the country (TN) and the substrate I was using before that was carpet. But once I switched to aspen, I never had humidity problems again except in the very dead of winter.

We've been using aspen and sphagnum moss and feeding in a separate container to avoid ingestion. The snakes in the sphagnum moss seem to enjoy burying themselves a lot more, probably because it stays fluffy. They can actually dive into it. We'll probably switch over to the moss completely.

this is a load of crap
well.. ill put it like this. i feed all my animals in there enclosure unless ive got two snakes in the same cage (i dont at the time). one thing all my snakes have in common is cage agression.... i wonder why =]

the thing is i realy dont care. bites are still VERY few and far between and as long as i give my snakes the time to realize i dont have any food im all good.

so though while i use to be a non beliver in the story of cage agression assiosiated with feeding ill admit my mind has changed on that..but in my own personal keeping i dont find it to be a issue worth adressing.. as long im the only one opening my cages im good to go.

IME with trying it on tarantulas aspen likes to mold in high humidity low circulation. But I think it'd work fine for most any snake uses...perhaps inc. some coco fiber.

I'm not really comfortable saying. Internet, you know? :) Nothing personal.

Yeah, I can see it definitely getting gross if you misted the enclosure or something like that.

Indirectly raising the humidity didn't seem to cause any problems, though. And by that I mean, say, slipping a layer of damp paper towels on top of the aquarium screen, and putting a regular towel over it (covering about 90% of the screen). As long as the paper towels weren't dripping, the aspen stayed dry and the humidity went up ridiculously high for about 24 hours. :)
