Does anyone know a good seller for Turkistan Cockroaches? Highly considering starting a colony and I have failed in many attempts to find a seller with good reviews in the US :/

Amazon sells them. Also, cap cod roaches and rainbow mealworms.

If you do go with Amazon let us know how it went. Im thinking about using them as a prime member.

Aaronpauling.com did me good in the past as well.

I've bought B. lats from Jamie's Tarantulas twice, and everything was perfect both times. She sends a good amount of extras in case of deaths during shipping, but I've honestly never seen even a single death either time I ordered. There were oothecae in the shipment, too. The ones that arrived as adults were obviously very healthy because they were (and have continued) popping out oothecae like mad. All of them of every size have had nice fat abdomens when they arrived and have grown very nicely. My colony has had so few deaths (if any) that in the 1.5 years I've had a lat colony I've never actually found even a single dead one. (But I bet some of my adults are now at the end of their lifespan, sadly.) I'd like to think good husbandry was a part of that, but honestly I believe the other big part was just buying healthy, good quality lats. I think healthy lats make healthy food.

I know there are a bunch of places to get them, but I honestly can't say enough nice things about buying lats from Jamie's!

thanks for the response! I never considered checking if Jamie’s Tarantulas sold red runners.. I’ll have to compare prices and shipping now :)

Aaron is great, but i think he only sells in multiples of 1000 at a time.

I started a B lateralis console back in October, 2019. I got one order from Cape Cod Roaches, and another from Jamie's Tarantulas. Cape Cod was a bit slow in my opinion, they didn't ship for 2 weeks. Jamie's Tarantulas was fast and easy to work with...

I combined both groups, and the colony is really doing well. Too well, I need more tarantulas...

Yes..this right here. I bought two groups of 50 from 2 different sources and started my colony with those roaches.

To maintain the viability of the colony and reduce inbreeding; you'll want to add new groups of roaches from varying sources once a year, or at the very least every other year. You don't need to add a lot, small groups of 50 once a year or at least every other year will be good.

Thank you everyone for the replies! I’m going to go ahead and purchase from Jamie’s Tarantulas since everyone seems to agree she knows what she’s doing :)

I forgot to mention, the customer service at Jamie's has also been particularly excellent for me, in addition to good products and great livestock (including spoods) and all the other good things I said above. Just all around really great.

And I'm just a fan of lats, too. As feeders or pets or both. I think they're pretty swell. :D

Congrats on your new roach friends! Enjoy!

Actually that works quite well if you want start a large colony - that's how I started my two :D
I usually order between 1000-5000 at a time, but many people don’t need/want that many. LOL. (I even ordered 10k once, That was a LOT of roaches... Which my cat decided to release into the house. :dead: )

OK...I'm curious, why don't you raise your own?

I though it was bad when my cat knocked over a bin of 200 - then I did the same thing myself a month later.

I personally go through about 300 a week, so even with my colonies breeding well I sometimes need to add some.

Partly convenience, and partly that i am trying to figure out a good balance for keeping them humid enough to breed, without getting nasty, attracting unwanted stuff like flies, and not wanting to put a lot of space or effort into it. Aaron’s prices are good enough (as well as a couple locals) that i can afford to order them in as i need them, and it is working well for me.

Jamies is great if you want just a few red runners, but if you want a larger amount Aaron sometimes has 250 count available. You have to keep an eye on his website though. I have to buy a couple of times a year even with my colony since my Ts are getting big and I end up feeding off the adults. and I got 500 from him last time I ordered. I use Jamies now only for pinheads when I run out for my tiny inverts.

So have you ever tried to raise roaches?

I have a small colony, and the numbers that you are talking about, that must be costly...though I don't have the contacts that you possess...
