Scolopendra Subspinipes d36585a3-27fe-4495-b9ab-efc57b35838c-3221053106.jpg

Anyone notice the difference in behavior between these two species? the subspinipes was sold to me as Dehaani. This photo is not it, but it looks exactly like this but it's 8 to 9 inches. it's very reactive and eats everything. anything new i put in the enclosure gets test bitten. the tiger-leg/hainanum is shy, not very reactive, and doesn't have the high feeding response as i see in the dehaani/subspinipes. i've actually never seen it eat. is this a locality thing, a temperament thing, or a species thing?

aren't dehaani and subspinipes very similar? And isn't it true that dehaani doesnt necessarily always come in cherry red? i remember seeing something about research on species ID and anatomical differences between the dehaani and subspinipes.

i just made this post to talk about behavior in different species of scolopendra and i think i'm starting to like the more aggressive varieties. they are more active and fun to watch. i almost never see my hainanum. it's always burried. the subspinipes isn't hiding, but i've given it enough substrate to hide.

Probably just varies by individual. I've had S. subspinipes burrow, and S. hainanum be on the surface.

interesting. Many people believe cohabitating centipedes is asking for trouble. I wonder how unlike the two species are. i wonder if they are compatible to breed.

My S. Hainanum just poked it's head out from a hiding place drank water from my mister and didn't bother with a cricket i know it could sense. strange animal this centipede. so shy. If i had to hold one (i will never) i would hold the Hainanum. The subspinipes is just violent all the time. So dominant i love it. that tiger leg was expensive for me. i fear the shy guy would be doomed if i cohabitated them. i am still curious. the odds are against me. they are different species, but so was Cro-Magnon and the Neanderthals and we Sapiens interbred with them. the Nile crocodile has also bred with the American crocodile. some Ligers are fertile too. there has been some ruckus in the scientific community about what a species actually is and what it's not. it would appear science doesn't quite have it right yet. Ratmosphere, do you breed centipedes? The DO come from the same genus, so I've got that going. BUT alligators are in the same genus as crocodiles and they cannot breed. i don't have the time, or current knowledge to know how anatomically and genetically different the two "species" are. ya know. they do have ranges. i wonder if any of their ranges overlap... AND i wonder how many years the american and nile crocodile were apart.

IT'S DANGEROUS EXPERIMENT... IT WOULD NOT BE FOR MY ENTERTAINMENT. IMAGINE.
