Thanks everyone for the info! :)

Conclusion of Bat Story

I never did get a human being on the phone from a rehab center. The Maryland Wildlife folks only gave me more rehab numbers and weren't very much help.

For two days the bat hid underneath my trash can (the can has wheels and had enough room for him/her to hide). On the second day I noticed it was hanging upside down from one of the wheels. I was tossing dead cicadas under the can (not getting to close) whenever I walked by. Today I came out to check on the bat and it was gone. No dead cicadas either, so maybe I did a decent job feeding it. My neighbor said that his dog was barking at something for a long while and he showed up just in time to see something take off from my yard (his dog cannot get into my yard BTW).

Also, I found an empty ransaked birds nest lying next to my deck. I don't think that species of bat eats anything other than insects, but who knows. I hope the bat is doing well and eating some of these damned cicadas.

Bark vs Bat Take 2

This is UNBELIEVABLE. What are the odds that I get another bat in my house??? It was just over a year ago that I brought you my whacky bat story. This one, although less humorus, at least includes a photo of the bugger. I didn't see it get in and I was in the house all day. It must have been in here since last night.

It would be funny if it was the same bat. This one is much bigger (the body was about 4 inches from head to rear), but the other one was a much lighter brown color.

Now I present:

Bark's guide to catching bats - a guide for the lazy.

?
  1. Turn lights on in every room and close off all rooms where the bat isn't
  2. Get a flashlight and trashcan (or a cardboard box)
  3. Go do something else for a half hour and let the bat calm down
  4. Check all of the dark spots in the "known bat area" with your flashlight.
  5. Look for bat (When the flashlight hits the bat it will "complain")
  6. Place trashcan or box over top of bat
  7. Get a piece of cardboard (see picture) and slide it underneath can or box
  8. Take the trapped bat outside
  9. Lift the can up and run like a little girl back into the house

Anyone know how I can keep bats out of my house? They are entering when I come home at night. I have an awning above my doorway that I think they occasionally hide in it.

wow! Another bat, lucky you <G>
I think you're just one of those people that seem to attract bats {D
I like having them around my property, since they keep the insects down, but I will admit, having them in the house itself doesn't seem like much fun.
I will keep your bat catching list handy in case I ever need it though!

Oh I like having them around my property as well. The weird thing is that I rarely if ever see any fly around at dusk. The only bats that I have seen in my area have all been in my house :(

The worst thing that I could have done (what my friend suggested) is to leave the door open and let the bat fly out. These things are pretty quick and I would hate if it flew out and when I wasn't watching. Could you imagine spending all night looking for a bat that was no longer there? I don't think I could have slept last night not knowing for sure that my furry flying friend was outside or inside.

Perhaps all this is a sign that I should go into crime fighting. Then again, maybe I am just supposed to wear the tights.

Where does one find tights for men... and a cape too? I have never been the store that carries that stuff except for Halloween. But if another bat invades my home, consider it done.

Tonight I get to stare at my house and see if any bats fly out. I live in a townhouse, so I can't believe that there would be any living in the walls or attic without me knowing it.

Hurray for learning a new British term. I didn't think undercrackers meant boxer shorts at first. I thought they meant something a bit more nutty instead. :8o
