"banana spider" can refer to Phoneutria spp., which you're referring to, or Nephila spp., which includes N. clavipes (native to SE USA), which da0 wants. ;)

I havn't read all the thread yet so sorry if I say something for the second time - but if you are moving to where they are native, why not capture a few and release them in your backyard. I mean, once they have set up shop you'll hardly miss them anyway...

If Sky had not posted those pictures I would have said I have seen them that large first hand as well. First time I saw one in such a large web it was hanging across a neighborhood road with trees on either side beyond the power lines...about 15 feet in the air :D (not sure on width...but it was a two lane road and the trees were about 5' off the road on either side).

Well as a little update appears needed here..I have decided to keep the dolomedes I found residing in my house for the time being as my main pet interest...but..I do see and they are quite interesting..green garden spiders all over that have the most beautiful coloring I have ever seen..and yes..I will be collecting one of the specimens just as soon as summer appears to come to an end and hopefully will find a nice big juicy baby just ready to come indoors..they dont appear to be a large species either which is quite nice so that will solve the whole banana 20-50 foot web problem :D... I will get a pic of one tomorrow so you can see how gorgeous they are!
