My a. avic. doesn’t seem to be happy in its new enclosure so I’m toying with an idea. I’m thinking of getting a screen cage like this: http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/-/22-gallon-basic-reptarium/ and put a potted banana plant in it.
When it begins to grow to large can I simply cut the top stalk?
Will a typical grow light be satisfactory?
Any disadvantages to this I haven't thought of yet?

No, it is too big. 22 gallons is huge for 1 avic, unless you are going to plant it heavy and go all natural.

First, what type of banana plant. The smallest dwarf, i know of is Dwarf Orinoco. At 5 foot it is way too big. You can not top a banana plant. It does not work like that. Bananas bloom, fruit, and die. They then come back up from the roots. Toping will just cause it to die, then regrow from the roots.
The dwarf banana grows 5 feet a year. then they die.

4-48" High out put lights works wonders. Do two cool and two warm.
But at 275 watts you are going to run the electric bill pretty quick.

I wouldn't expect that the avic would appreciate the grow light too much.

Sorry, no way a banana tree is going to fit in your enclosure, even the smallest as said before. No U cannot cut the top stalk to limit the grown.

I guess U will pay a high enegry bill for nothing, just choose some other plant. Look for tropical plants that dont need much light.

Take a look at these tropical plants (the site is brazilian but the scientific names are the same...)

good luck!
