Legality doesn't really MATTER to those of us here in CA!! I have LOTS of friends who have ferrets... all the pet stores sell ferret FOOD, ferret CAGES, ferret TOYS, just no ferrets. I also had a friend who had a sugar glider... never bothered to ask her where she got it, just assumed it was o.k!!

While I understand where you are coming from this will make it a tad harder to find one or rather one that's ( for lack of a better term ) from good stock. Technically in order to breed and sell Gliders one must be USDA licensed and records are kept of whom you sell to and where they went. That means most breeders aren't going to risk sending one to Cali and losing their license over it.

That being said you probably can find someone local that has them but if they have any sense they wont be advertising it so it may take some searching on your part.

Actually, it would be MUCH easier than that! It's true when they say, "You can get ANYTHING in California!" Out here in the rural parts, you can get your hands on just about any animal you desire. Just put the word out and next thing you know, you'll have 3 or 4 professional breeders on your hands! I'm not saying they would be reputable, but you'll probably find SOMEONE who is here to sell "DECENT animals" cuz they are sick of seeing such "poor quality" creatures being circulated.

My only real problem with someone obtaining one illegally in a state they aren't supposed to be in is as follows. Even though the chance of someone getting caught by the wrong people is slim if it does happen they seize and euthanize the animal. Sorry but it seems like an unwarrented risk and it puts the animal in jeopardy simply due to the human greed factor of if I see it then I want it and screw the rules.

sorry

if I sound rude or something, but that thing looks like a little fuzzy rat to me, not very appealing. But then again, I don't find a lot of baby mammals 'cute'- have you ever seen a baby wildabeest on the discovery channel?

Those are great pics! I just got my first two Gliders about a month ago. They were both 7-8 weeks OOP (out of pouch) when I brought them home but I had picked them out a month before and got to go see them several times before then. They are both males and get along great. I love Gliders so much now, they're awesome little critters. One of mine is pretty nasty, he's not bonding nearly as fast as my other male. My sweet one rarely ever crabs at me or nips. Their noise is worse than their teeth at this age it is anyway, lol. They have yet to bring blood although Spike (the nippy one) has come close. They both get time in the bonding pouch, but I've been putting them in there seperately lately since Spike does better alone in it. I can't wait til they bond to me and are sweet little guys. I think when they are neutered it might calm them down a little too.
What diet are you using for your Gliders? I have mine on the BML diet with fruits and veggies and insects. What treats and foods do yours like best? I've been trying different things with mine but I'm always looking for suggestions from other Glider owners.

I use BML with veggies mixed in one night and fruit the next. I also give mealies as a treat and on occasion will skip the BML for something like mixed fruit baby food or yogurt but that is only say once per month if even that. I am a believer in sticking to the BML pretty strictly as I don't trust anything else nearly as much. On the insect thing I only go mealies and skip crickets alltogether since they simply aren't worth the potential risk.

We have some pretty good pics of our little girl, Pockets here. Go check 'em out! Some are blurry, but some are great. (There's also a cute "Sugar Glider's Prayer."

PS...Guys, this is probably the best Valentine's gift you could get your sig. other! Mine was a gift two years ago and it keeps on paying! However, they go for about $200 bucks each here in Colorado.

How long do SG's live?
That prayer is sweet. (wipes a tear from my eyes). Now I got to have one. Are they also called flying squirrels?

Sorry about the big pics! If I remember right, they can live 15 years or a bit more. They are a LOT of work. They are not flying squirrels as we know them, but actually marsupials from Australia. I think their closest relative is a kangaroo or koala or something, believe it or not!

Petarus breviceps ( Sugar Glider )
They are a small gliding marsupial related to several other Australian flying marsupials such as greater gliders, squirrel gliders, and a few other species I can't remember off the top of my head. They are also related to the other marsupials like kangaroos and such. Captive life span is in the 12 to 15 year range. They started coming into the exotic pet hobby here in the US in the mid to late 80s.

Nice pics by the way. :)
