Hi! My first post on this forum! Due to unfortunate circumstances i had to let go of my male Lasiodora Parahybana, however I will be on the look out for a new tarantula come October. I am particularly interest in the baboon spider family, the local store have a Ghana Sunburst Baboon for sale.

Does anyone have any experience with these spiders? Or even if you could suggest a spider (i am not interested in red knees, chile roses, or arboreal species)? Thanks. :)

With the reference sunburst (don't you love common names?) I'd be thinking more of Pterinochilus murinus. A very hardy, dry tolerant tarantula. Definately not recommended to be handled as they suppossedly have a potent bite (cramping, etc - See the bite reports in this forum). I keep a bunch of them and fortunately haven't been bitten. If you're not very experienced with tarantulas, a calmer species might be a better choice.
Good luck if you choose to purchase one.

If it is an H.Maculata, be careful if youre not very experienced. They have one of the more potent venoms.Id suggest G.Pulchra.

Not not interested in arboreal species that would rule out this Ghana Sunburst Baboon if it is indeed Heteroscodra maculata, as rknralf said the "whatever Sunburst whatever" names are normaly used for Ptera's (at one time they where all called Starburst's here) but if they know its from West Africa (they could have just picked Ghana at random i guess) id think Heteroscodra or Stromatopelma no matter what kind of babbon it is be careful with it bite's from Ptera's and Stromapelma are't fun been hit by both myself the S.calceatum hurt more at the bite site (a male) but had at night in hospital from a OBT bite.

Welcome to the boards Night Crawler...and I'm glad to see a fellow Scot here at last (I am assuming you are native and not just enjoying the better life North of the border?). You have specified which species you are not interested in, but you have not included any criteria for your new addition to meet with e.g. size, shape, colour, general temperament, old world, new world etc.

Please let me the address of the store you have seen the P murinus. I will be travelling to Edinburgh at end June and would like to pay the place a visit.

BTW...is there an AC/DC and Motley Crue theme to your nickname and avatar??

Check out P. cancerides. Really cool terrestrial, one of my favorites. Not one of your friendlier species, though.

All I gotta say is UNICORN BABOONS!! HORNED BABOONS CERATOGYRUS GENUS!! I love the african horned baboons sooooo much, particularly the marshalli (straight horned) and the saunderi (sandy.. I guess). Mean and vicious, beautiful, and way intriguing... nothing like them! a favorite and "must have" at any party. Get you a unicorn/horned baboon tarantula! you wont be sorry.

that sunburst like all are saying is either a usambara orange (Pternochilus sp.) or a Togo Starburst (Heteroscodra maculata). Might even be a red featherleg... if youre way lucky (Stromatopelma calceatum). either way... dont pay more that 30 bucks.

I'm not a native, I'm from Northern Ireland and am living it up across the sea! Night Crawler is a reference to a Judas Priest song, and yes, that is Nikki Sixx from the Crue!

It is the Aquatic Centre just off Cadzow place (check a map, or it's in the yellow pages).

I am looking for something that is highly active and challenging to keep (not in terms of husbandry, but aggressiveness etc, which may sound stupid, but nevertheless). I am not interested in arboreal species, and old world and new world are all considered. Something that will not grow over 6" leg span. Cheers.

I just have to say that I absolutely adore Nikki Sixx. I have a Redknee named Sixx and my email address is Katesixx1258@aol.com ...NICE avatar! That's who I thought that was a tribute to. Also "Nightcrawler" is an awesome song! I am going to see Priest at Ozzfest next month.
Sorry to totally hijack the thread. The only thing I can add is that P. Murinus is an awesome looking spider and reportedly has quite the attitude. :)

Cool, someone who like metal! Any word on a UK Ozzfest? Crue are having a reunion in 2005, so I'm already there!

I understand this forum is about tarantulas, so I'll shut it.
