Right?

This is a gift for my son, I have to hide it for another few days...
Anyway, male, normal color phase, approx. 10".
Ok, it's really for me, but I'll let him think it's his!

"NORMAL" color phase? At that size, most Corns are still mostly greyish with just a bit of red showing! I'd say that's an Okeetee! Their color just gets better and brighter with every shed; your son will be one happy kid when he sees "his" snake on Christmas morning, IF you can keep it from glowing in the dark and attracting attention before then!

Speaking of Corns, I found a little season-confused two-footer tonight crossing the highway on the way home from last-minute Christmas shopping! We have just recently had some temps in the 'teens, and it's forecast to drop back into the upper 'teens on Christmas night, although it got up to 60 today. I passed by this orange wrinkled strip near the side of the road, and my eyeballs instinctively registered "SNAKE", while my rational brain said, "No WAY! It's late DECEMBER! Must have been a ribbon or a strip of colored paper or something...", but I decided to make a 3-point turn and to check it out, just in case, and lo and behold! It WAS a Corn snake, very much alive and alert, and fat as a little butterball! Merry Christmas to me, I guess!

Well it appears as though I lucked out then!

It is pre-shed right now as well, are they the same as T's in that they become more vibrant with the new skin?

I quite like this little guy...

Indeed everyone needs at least one snake!

I agree it looks like an Okeetee to me as well. I have a couple & can remember when they looked like that. They are great snakes, good find Sheri.

My mother gave me some money for Christmas because she didn't want to try to buy me what I really wanted. She doesn't like reptiles or inverts but is supportive of my intrest in them.

Here is the little bugger she "bought" me. He is a leucistic black rat snake. I don't have a name yet but he is sweet as can be.

HERE is where I got him & an adult picture. I really dig this snake.

Great find Sheri!! Is this your first herp?

Ok...
I'm bad.
I couldn't wait and gave it to him as soon as he got home.

Damn, I suck at this waiting thing!

Well, I'm really happy to hear that I got a more unusual variety!

First herp. Sort of. I had a Ball phython but it freaked me out so I took it back. That was about a year ago.

Screw the waiting thing...... I suck at it too.

How / why did a ball python freak you out?

I don't know if I would call an Okeetee an unusual variety though. It is actually a naturally occuring color phase and considered by many to be the most beautiful to spite the fact it's natural. It's probably not even a question that it's THE most beautiful of the natural colors. I personally don't dig all the color variations brought on by selective breeding.

I am not so comfortable with snakes, and the ball python was more snake than sheri could handle... :D

I understand completely. :D I just don't like ball pythons regardless but that's just my opinion. I have had everything from redtail boas BCI, to Burmese pythons, corn snakes, racers, and anaconda. The only problem I ever had was when the anaconda was hungry he would chew on my hand. Yeah, it hurt.

You'll get more comfortable as time goes on and pretty soon you never know what you might end up with. In the mean time enjoy the cornsnake, get him a mate and raise her up. They are supposed to be really fun and rewarding to breed. Mine just aren't old enough yet. ;)

The only one I ever gave a second look was one produced by Ralph Davis I believe. He named it Karma ckick HERE to see a pic of her.

I have just never been a fan of all the genetic stuff they are doing. Not to mention that a 5+ digit price is just nuts for a ball python. To each his own though. :D

Well... I guess I should have known that one would only suffice for so long...

Pituophis Sayi (Bull snake) and a CalKing.

I'm jealous!!

I'm in a weird situation right now, my folks hate snakes with a passion, so I'm not allowed to even discuss bringing one home. But spiders are ok.

The Leucistic Rat Snake on the first page is actually a Leucy Texas Rat. Leucy Black Rats are MUCH less common and are alot more expensive than the Texas variety.

Ok, which one, exactly?

I referred to them as a corn snake, bullsnake, and calking in that order...
