Midas has not accepted any form of food in 3 months, he still gets water but it seems he does more often now than ever before. He still digs and does housekeeping and will spend some time in his hut, and is decently active. I wanted some insight on whether we’re still looking at a premolt or not. He’s definitely mature, and has molted with me once since I’ve had him (got him in July, Molt in august) which he completed within a day with no clear issues. Also his abdomen is still very large.
If someone could please give me some insight on what could be going on I would be very grateful.

Haha yeah he’s definitely a big big boy. So wait until his size decreases, then offer food again? What do you recommend I do? If anything at all.

Why did you think a large abdomen on a T requires more food, and concerned for not eating in 3 months?

Are you are of their metabolism?

And if he’s a MM as you wrote he won’t eat much, and will be dead soon

You should do more research on your cherished pet.

I didn’t think he required more food, I only offered every 2-3 weeks. And I am aware of how low their metabolic rate is, I did as much research as I possibly could, but I wanted to touch base with those that have lived and learned just about anything you can run into before I took the information the internet gave me and ran with it. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Was thinking the same thing. For a male to have molted and gotten that fat is interesting to me. I usually feel lucky if I can convince them to eat at all, let alone get that big lol

Do you mean he’s “definitely mature” as in he’s not a juvenile, or do you mean that he’s an actual mature male who had his final molt last time? In tarantula-land, we need to be really specific about using “mature” if we’re talking about males.

Either way, this is all totally normal, but the outcome will be different. It’s not uncommon at all for tarantulas in the Brachypelma genus to go a long, long time without food. I have a B. hamorii who’s been fasting since November. Last year, she fasted for about 7 months before molting and resuming, and she’s still not fully grown. Some with adults say they can fast for a year or so before molting.

Once fat, they stay fat until they molt, so there’s no waiting for them to slim down enough to eat again otherwise.

If yours is a mature male in the sense that he’s hooked out and is ready to breed, it means he has only procreation on his mind and likely won’t eat much, if at all, anymore and will eventually pass away.
