Hi just got a Avic Purpurea sling and I’m guessing that it starts off with these yellowish legs correct? Does anyone have photos of their Avicularia purpurea?

I have a few pics, from sling to juvenile. :)

He moulted once more after the last picture, but alas, I can't get a clear picture anymore because he obscured his whole enclosure with webbing. :meh:

Okay. Well it looks like I may have a T that’s been sold under the wrong name. Oh well I’ll keep this mystery spider and see what happens lol

I got mine as a 3rd or maybe 4th instar, yours is most probably 2nd instar, but I actually don't know if they would change their appearance that drastically in one or two moults... :embarrassed: So, you may have another Avic.

Maybe some Avic experts could chime in... :) @cold blood @CEC @viper69

Just to make sure... you do know that it needs a different kind of enclosure, right? ;)

The store where I buy my crickets from had some of these labeled as a purple pink toe that’s it. That’s what I get for impulse buying tbh.

If it was labeled correctly, that name gets used for both Avicularia purpurea and Avicularia sp Peru purple (also why common names are terrible)

Yeah. This is my 4th ever T. I basically have all Avics and a GBB now. At first I didn’t really see the big deal in the scientific names but now having multiple of the same spider I am eating my words. Thanks a lot for your help!

You might just find that this one grows up nice and purple ;) and not like your other Avicularia avicularia

Yep, you don't have purpurea....they are very distinctive as slings.

Edit: any chance you ordered an Avicularia sp. "Peru purple"? Not avicularia purpurea ?
My first thought as well....although this is a now defunct name, they are now juronesis mt #2

IMO a more desireable species for many reasons.

First, purpurea is really dark purple, only purple in the right light actually....juronesis mt#2 on the other hand, is a bright, unmistakable purple

Next, theyre hardier than purpurea, which is IME the least hardy of all Avics and one of the most fragile species there is.

Growth is another great difference, purpurea are among, if not the slowest growing Avic (this extended period as slings probably doesn't help with their delicate nature)...juronesis 2 is one of the faster growers.

Juronesis has a great appetite....purpurea does not have a great appetite, especially in comparison.

Purpurea is one of the smaller Avics, being about a 4" species for an adult female, juronesis mt #2 is one of the larger, reaching close to the 7" range.

Purpurea is also much more reclusive, juronesis are better display species as they confidently sit in the open.

Juronesis 2 is, IMO, the most under-rated of all avics, it gets literally no hype, which is shocking considering how people go gaga for blue and purple ts.

Lets hope this is what you have, because a lot, no, most avic slings look just like what you have, so it could be any number of species....that's what one gets for buying a t based on a common name....I always tell people, if you don't know the scientific name, you don't actually know what you have if buying an unfamiliar species. Regardless though, care is no different and anything Avic or related is always a good t to have....one cant go wrong getting an Avic.

Yeah. I’m dumb for buying it lol. I went to get crickets. It was a total impulse buy and I’m ashamed. THAT BEING SAID....I’m kinda excited now lol. I was gonna keep it regardless because like you said can’t go wrong with an Avic plus that means I know have 3 avics and it’s always good to have more than one type right? 🤷🏽‍♀️ So one can learn? If it is Juruenis then it’ll be the biggest T I have in my collection.

Only 3? Oh boy, that's not nearly enough....hehe

The ones I posted earlier are 6.5"

A purpurea do not have yellowish legs as slings- no Avic does. I've raised these before.

A purp and a few other Avic slings start off with grey/black for colors.

CEC might have some in his thread. I'm pretty sure years ago he posted a listing of the 3 different Avic sling groupings, ie each group looks the same as a sling. The blues primarily come out of Brazil. The purples primarily Ecuador and Peru.

First, purpurea is really dark purple, only purple in the right light actually
This is really true. It's a lot like geroldi in that manner.

not at all.

There's about 3 or 4 species your T could be. We won't know till it's an adult most likely, and even then we may not know. Avics are notoriously difficult to ID with pictures, we don't recommend it at all. There are some as adults that one can do ID by a pictures, but not many. As slings, IMO there's only one you can ID as a sling with a picture or two. And it's not versi.

Either way, it'll be a gorgeous tarantula

Edit: it's also not Caribena laeta, they also are blue as spiderlings like versicolor
