Avicularia magdalena (auranticum)

There is a reptile store close to me that has a 4.5" female Avicularia magdalena ( I believe that their name has been changed to Avicularia auranticum from what I have read ). We took her out and looked her over and we both confirmed she is a female, and very healthy too. She is a beautiful spider, and $70. If I purchased this species from her I would want to breed them, they seem like most Avic species when it comes to breeding from what I have read. But, I can not find anyone who has them for sale, has anyone seen them around? I would also like a cross price check on the species and a potential mate for her before I purchase her.

I believe that is now A.aurantiaca,or however it is spelled.

I saw around 2003 on AB, some UK users were picking slings up for 6 "pounds", and one american purchased one for $25 at a reptile expo, and other members were calling it a steal. I have never heard of this species before your post. Id suggest grabbing it up. A beautiful T, and if you happen across a male in the future, you could probably make a nice litle profit on the slings.

Awesome, I believe I will, she is a real beauty! I better call her (just so happens she is also a friend of mine) and tell her to reserve her for me until I can get back to pick her up. Maybe at a local reptile convention coming up or at the NARBC I can find a mate. If anyone else has any more info on this species would be great, mostly where to get a male.

Some info on the name confusion. Clicky

According to the World Spider Catalog by Platnick Avicularia juruensis is still a valid species. And Avicularia magdalenae is a synonym of Hapalopus formosus Ausserer, 1875 and not a synonym of A. aurantiaca nor A. juruensis BUT you are right that at the beginning A. aurantiaca was (and sometimes still is) sold in the pet trade by some dealers labeled "Avicularia magdalena". But this pet trade "A. magdalena" has nothing to do with the real A. magdalenae (= H. formosus).

Alright, so if I am reading this right: " A. aurantiaca was (and sometimes still is) sold in the pet trade by some dealers labeled "Avicularia magdalena". In that case A. aurantiaca = Avicularia magdalena. Now the reptile store has her labeled as a "cinnamon pinktoe" or something like that, but we all know common names get tossed around and changed, especially with rarer species. When I asked the species, she told me that it was a "Avicularia magdalena". So I will double check on the color patterns and markings as best I can, but from what I remember of the spider it looked like a A. aurantiaca. Cool

I personally would not try to breed that spider unless you can get males that came from the SAME locale.Do some research on where that thing came from. Start asking the people you got it from questions.As bady as it sucks,sometimes it is better off not attempting to breed some of the more rare Avicularia unless you can completely lock down where they originate from,or pair sackmates.

Agreed. I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, I mostly thought it was cool to stumble randomly upon a rare Avic (potentially). Since they are not reliably available I need to get my info straight before I get ahead of myself. Never the less, when I get a 100% taxonimy on the spider available to me, and if she really is an A. aurantiaca, I will buy her just to have a cool rare Avic for an awesome price to add to my collection.
