Who else here collects/studies fossils, here?

I spend a good bit of time going around collecting, and occasionally assist the dallas museum with setting up and building skeletal displays, such as the super croc exhibit a few years ago.

would love to see pics of your collections.

Hey Ted, This thread should probably be in "The Watering Hole" fourm....

As far as fossils go, I used to work at a Natural History Museum as the Collection's Curator... I love fossils also. Whenever I'm out in the field I keep an eye out for fossils, lithics, rocks & minerals, cacti, etc... I did some hunting in the Brazos Valley (Central Texas) as well as West Texas...

ah..well maybe a mod or someone can relocate the thread..i never know where to put stuff.
excellent to hear about your knowledge and prior experience..I knew many of the curators in dallas.
all very cool people.

What Texas native finds have you collected?
I enjoy hunting in the Dallas Ft Worth and surrounding areas..but have collected all over Texas..and out of state.
I really enjoy the marine fossils here..I have several secret locations that i get nice shark, manta ray, sawtooth, and other teeth..as well as some various vetebrate material.
have you done much collecting in Ladonia?..some killer mososaur material, even complete specimens have been located there.
I found large sections of mososaur vertebrae, jaws w/teeth,huge turtle, plesiosaur, and great pleistocene material, including wooley camel, equestrine, and others.

What a stock pile of stuff you must have over there! I don't have a very good eye for fossils but I try to keep an eye out for them when I think about it. I only have some gastropod fossils. I found a couple of native tools I think. I'll post pics of them here later to see what you think. Just a couple, they look like only rocks at first but, looking closer, one looks like a grinding tool and the other, a cutting or bone crushing tool.

I used to go dig dinosaur bones in WY every year. Now that I have a gaggle of kids following me around whining I just go on short jaunts to get ammonites, trilobites, corals, fish and such. Utah has TONS of fun places to find things!

i have also collected some great white river material from WY!
I have two Oreodont skulls[i think these are the predecessors to the Sabertooth cat]..one of which took me almost a year to uncover and clean..its canines are broken, but the rest of the teeth are intact!..and the skull itself is 95% complete..but the other is 30%.

Well here are those items I thought might be some stone age tools. I found them on a private ranch to the west of here. The first one seems like a grinder to me and that second one really feels like a bone breaker but ...don't know. What do you think?

thats interesting enough..the first does look like a grinder..or pestle.
the second i am not so sure about, but the possibility is there.
were they in proximity?

No, they were far apart from each other. I didn't find them the same day. I looked around the area for more things but didn't find anything. The one in the second pic really stood out. It was sitting on a bunch of white limestone rock. It's not made of the native rock in the area, that's why I noticed it. The grinding looking rock appears to be quartz. It has another indentation on the other side. Would that be another clue to you? My thumbs fit there perfect.

I collect leaf fossil imprints and shark teeth(megalodon). Also collect native american indian projectile points if you consider those fossils.

i think its worth looking into..certainly.
the opposing thumb impressions would be a tip off..it might take a bit of cross reference to determine the characteristics.
does the second one seem to have a ''worked'' edge?..its a bit hard to tell in the pic.
but the shape is mighty interesting..it would seem a great tool..and the fact thqt its made of non native material is interesting as well.

what area do you collect the leaf imprints?
and sure..points are plenty good enough.
i have found that finding fossils is easier than points.

anyone else find that too?

"reduced biface" ..I had to look at my pic to see what that might mean, does that refer to how it tapers down towards my little finger? It really feels good in my hand, my right hand. Real awkward in my left. I should keep it by my bed at night in case someone breaks in!, but I think the rifle will work:) .

that certainly was the context i meant..you betcha!
i think you should look into it..take it to a local university or something.
i wished i was more of an archeologist..but have much to learn still.

I've had a bit of a fossil collection going for a while. It includes many fish skeletons, a fragment of a spinosaur tooth, fragments of Edmontosaurus, amber with an insect preserved in it, trilobites, ammonites (one two opalised), tree-fern leaves, shark teeth (including Megalodon) dinosaur eggshell fragments, pieces of mammoth tusk and yes, even a coprolite.
