Yes, sure, they'are not the very close related bugs indeed, more this many staphylinidae feeds on herbi and fungi. Some also unlike carabidae are parasitic to other inverts.
But if You look any other You will not find much closer of well-known and common bugs.

Rove Beetles have wings. But the elytra are small. They don't go down the abdomen. It's like the tend to stay on the thorax or something. I think you did miss something because as far as I know all Rove Beetles have elytra and wings. If I'm wrong some one correct me but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

I love these beetles too and have come across loads. I too sometimes confuse them with earwigs but when I see that they don't have the 2 pincers on the back then I know I'm looking at a rove beetle. Pretty thing IMO.
