Annoying taboos that come with keeping tarantulas.

I got a kinda weird response the other day from someone who wanted to see photos of my bugs. They asked "Don't they creep you out at all?" My response was something like "Actually I think they're cute."

I'm not sure who would keep something that creeps them out. I guess they just weren't really thinking when they asked that.

That's how it happened for me too. I'm so glad I found them interesting and continued to research!
This. This is exactly how I overcame my irrational fear of spiders and joined the hobby.

Well said friend.

I have several friends that won't come over to my apartment anymore. BUT that will slowly change, a lot of them will start asking all kinds of questions about T's and I inform them as well as I can as a beginner.

I like to think I'm changing their minds like I did my own!

The most I've really gotten is people asking a lot of questions. I find myself answering questions a lot when I make the monthly trip to my local LPS for crickets :)
Other than that though, I've gotten the " Why don't you just have a dog like normal people.. " and the " I hope you get bitten.. "

Dogs bite more people than tarantulas do.

Seriously, I've been bitten in the face by so many dogs (of every breed, even so-called "friendly" breeds), and never once by any of my T's - even my super aggressive Lp.

The dating scene

I hate that it's difficult to find a guy who isn't freaked out by T's. Really hard to find one who wants to be my boyfriend after finding out I have spiders as pets. Needless to say, I don't have one. I'm 23, single, and haven't found a single person who likes spiders. Sad. No friends who want to talk about my T's either.

I always get the "Are they poisonous?" Drives me crazy. Ha!

^ Finding a girl who can put up with tarantulas is 100x harder.

Anywho, I've never hid my hobby. When I was a kid, I always brought my spiders to school for, "show and tell". I'm 19 now and still have those ts.

To answer the OP's original question, I, like DamonM have never hid my hobby either. I'm quite proud of all my T's.
