Horse, Rat, Cow, Tarantula, Fish, Ostrich, etc. etc. I like cows, really, lol. Not sure why, they just always seemed to be wicked interesting animals, IMO. I'd eat horse, I'd eat anything really, depending on the situation and all. Reptiles to me are more important than dogs and cats, yet I have eaten alligator meat. Just look at them as feeders;P jk. People will always be offended by people eating what they consider a pet animal. I'm sure a lot of people would back hand me for feeding mice and rats to my reptiles, and there is probably a group of people who raise little pet crickets out there somewhere that hate us all!

man, if youll gonna kill someone/something, give him/her/it/whatsoever the best thing for it will be the last.

this thing really sucks, giving them small amont of food and only vitamins to stay alive, dargging them in chains when they end to slauhter house, and skinning them even they still kicking and cying in terror... etc... dont want to remember these things...

damn, hope those who slauhter should be killed in the way the kill vertebrates.

man vertebrates have nerves that cause pain...

those who go in lethal injection where in peaceful death.

ill give him spagetti for long life:D

Good I also believe horses should not be killed. As someone stated they are seen as co workers and companions, which I see them as well. I don't see cows taking children for rides or helping to move heavy things. To me cows are just lumps of meat, that still need to be treated with respect. However I believe that people are entitled to eat what they want but horse is not a big market in the USA so there should be no reason to kill them for food here.

Geesh...some of those links...

I have horses as well, and because of that, I just can't handle the idea. I mean, my old miniature horse, Red, and another horse, Damien were going to go to meat factories. Both were young at the time (Red was only a few months) and damien was a beautiful, sleek, black stallion- both had futures..That's what bothers me- I mean, If the horse has broken its leg, or can't be useful in other ways, I can understand..but all these ex race horses and everything..I think they've earned their keep till the end of their days.

The biggest problem there though, is backyard breeding, there's an excess of horses, everyone and their brother thinks it would be cool to breed, and its REALLY not a good idea.. *shrug* Its one of those inevitable evils I suppose, you have extra animals, how can you get rid of em? Slaughter.

The sad thing about this is Most of those horses will turn out to be VERY GOOD if they get saved~ I know I've bought a couple Horses from Auctions that were going to be killed for meat, and they've all turned out wonderful, even gentle enough for a small child to ride. I've been breaking/training horses since I Was 13, and It seems that the horses that are set for slaughter USUALY end up being the easiest to train...All it takes is a little compassion!

I'm also for eating "what you want" as long as it isn't endangered. But to make that statment a little better actually - Eat what you want that you have raised yourself. Be wary of the numbers if you take from nature.

Yep, the two we saved from a guy who was sending to auction were awesome horses. Damien, the stud, was so sweet, you could have a 5 year old walk him next to a mare, without a single problem or snort. Red, is now 8, and an awesome driving horse. I think its part of human nature- a lot are just wasteful.

And I agree, eat what you want that you raised and such, but If an animal can be much more useful in other ways...

Ofcourse I have nothing against saving (maybe that needs to be said). As long as any animal in question gets a good life afterwards. So saving just for savings sake and then just hearding them somewhere into a dull retirement home isn't very good either. But I guess that's all just common sense.

I think you hit on a very important point. Its the reason millions of dogs and cats are killed in pounds every year. People are irresponsible and wasteful.

Racehorses give their lives, and their bodies for us, and like you said, most are tossed to the side. They deserve a certain amount of respect and compassion. Its amazing to see how much an animal will sacrifice itself for its owner. My dad is a veterinarian, and I have been around horses since the day I was born. I see it time and again, but its rarely recognized.

while people are putting their two cents in...

i don't personally own a horse, but i do view them as pets and pleasure, not food. but there are several new problems created by this act...

the majority of horses who were sent to slaughter were lame or otherwise unfit for either sale or use. breeders and distributers alike find themselves "stuck" with animals whose medical bills they can't afford. from a business standpoint, they had the choice to either pay to have their animal euthanized or sell it for a low price and cut their losses.

also, there were an overwhelming number of horses who needed to be rehomed when slaughter was still legal. now, significantly more horses will either be squeezed into available facilities or simply put down.

on top of all this, the new classification of horses as companion animals is going to have a HUGE breeders. facilities that specialize in horses will no longer be able to claim themselves as farms for the purposes of taxes and fees, and so they will hit new financial pitfalls.

See, thats not entirely true. PMU babies are regularly sent to slaughter, ex race horses... any horse that ends up at auction that no one wants. Its not just those that can't be used in other ways. Its any horse that no one is willing to buy, and there's a lot of them. Mentioning PMU could open a whole new can of worms..lol

yeah, PMU babies make up a huge section too. i guess i was just trying to make the point that there are going to be a lot of unwanted/unplaceable horses that will end up being euthanized anyway, instead of being sold for meat. which in my opinion is almost worse... at least, in a way, something became of the horses who were sent to slaughter. :(

The only problem there is that they could very well be treated bad. Insufficient food, unhealthy food, over crowding... That's a horrible way to end a life.

Horses have been part of U.S. history for a VERY LONG time, and they were kept as companions or did work for us. They were domesticated like dogs were, to help people out with different jobs, not for consumption.

For riding, therapy, pulling carriages and carts, racing, riding into battle, horse shows, for rounding up cattle, and the list goes on.

Different breeds have different jobs.

So if we dont eat dogs who work for us, why should we eat horses?
