No kidding. I own both T.stirmi and apophysis. They kick off a ridiculous amount of hairs then roll over onto them and molt. I was always curious if they ever got into their own eyes. Just curious since they lay on them when molting. Thank you for telling me something I knew since 2009 when I acquired my T.stirmi about why they have urcitating hairs to begin with. I was always just curious about hairs in their eyes. My curiosity is dead now because nightstalker set me straight and cleared my curiosity.
Just seemed like you were oblivious,

Nope just curious after years of watching them molt in a mountain of loose hairs wondering to myself do they ever get one in the eye. I know it dosent bother them but thought if you could look at their eyes with enough magnification would there be a hair sticking out? Beats me but I am curious.

I’m sure if you could you would see maybe a hair stuck to it, but on the ocular tubercle where the eyes are located each eye has a protective coating... because they lack eye lids and are always open.

This thread has just given me a new irrational fear... I have enough as it is! Maybe not such an irrational fear more like me responding irrationally by feeling like I need to wear eye protection when I open the lid of any enclosure.

Just 30 mins ago I basically had my head in my albo's enclosure waiting for him to take a feeder. I would have gotten a facial if he had decided to kick fairs (never has done before though). So thanks for the reminder NOT to do that in future.

Thank you for using the words ocular tubercle. I have a better understanding of the eyes now. Didnt mean to come off as rude as I did but you made feel like a noob with a dumb question, when i was just curious and this seemed like a perfect post to pop in and ask. There is a great video on the infamous YouTube where a T.apophysis kicks off a ton of hairs and molts, worth watching if you havent seen for yourself. Anyways have a good day man.

The video is called Theraphosa apophysis molting by mingu1987 to those who are interested in seeing as to why I am curious to begin with.

Oh man I apologize if I made you feel that way really. I wasn’t trying to at all.
Just trying to let you know that the T’s defenses doesn’t work against them :)

I will check it out, my buds T Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens juvie kicks off an A@$ ton of its hair on the molting mat she’s made. I’m anxious to see if mine will do the same, she is in pre molt now which seems for ages...
but uh I’m not sticking my head in to find out :cyclops:

There is a species I cannot remember off the top of my head it was on National Geographic a few years ago, I wanna say it was the Theraphosa Blondi Goliath Birdeater. Can kick it’s hairs up to around 6 feet or more, depending how threatened it feels. Meaning any threat I am sure it thinks it’s going to get eaten since we’re gigantic squishy loud things to itself.

Urticating hairs are annoying and itchy and everybody keeps saying you DON'T want them in your eyes and i understand that but I'm curious about what exactly happens if they do make contact with the eyes? Is it lemon juice bad or is it "i immediately have to go to the hospital" bad?
You need to head to hospital. You may suffer loss of vision, it's documented in the literature.

The Grammo going blind thing, 99% sure this false. I have not read in the medical literature such a case. There are less than 5 cases in the med literature if I recall for this issue.

However, one can lose vision.
