One of my A. geniculatas, a now 4.5 inch female molted the other day and I saw her outside her hide for the first time today. She looks completely normal except for one thing that I have never seen before.

She is making these jerking motions with her body. The best way to describe it is watching someone with the hiccups. The motions are completely synchronized too. Like 1...2...3...jerk...1...2...3...jerk. She's been doing this for half an hour now.

I have no camera to film this with and a picture would be useless in this situation so I hope that somebody, (after they are done laughing of my ridiculous explanation), would recognize the behavior and tell me if there is something wrong or if she's just learning how to waltz. Or maybe it really is the hiccups. I hope so cause then I get to try to scare her. :p

Without images it's hard to tell but after a molt they are very weak, just leave her alone, access to water, don't worry :)
Btw hello man

That sounds bad D: She could just be trying to dry off / harden after molting, but she could possibly have DKS? I hope not :(
Scaring has never removed my hiccups, I always hold my breath for 10 seconds! I don't think a spider can do that tho, hah

:banghead:
DKS is not a disease or illness, its a symptom (most often a result of toxins). A diagnosis of DKS is like going to the doc and having him diagnose you with a stuffy nose....no the stuffy nose isn't a diagnosis, its a symptom of the influenza you have.

OHHHHH okay, I'm a dummy :drunk: That makes more sense then, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME I TOTALLY KNEW THAT TOO. It must be my fever! D: I should get some sleep or something, before I start saying more dumb things like tarantulas are a type of bird

Some arboreals are distantly related to owls, which is why their eyesight is better than other t's. In the past, they used to be 8 winged birds (before evolution changed their wings to legs, of course) known as octo-raptors.:p

I read that one the interweb anyway, it had 200 likes so it must be 100% true.:bag:

That sounds like an arachnophobes nightmare  Pretty sure they'd end up the second species purposefully driven to extinction if they did exist... Except for the few kept by people like us :)

One of these ancient octo-raptors was known as the buffalo owl....its abundance at the time, combined with all those wings is where the term "buffalo wings" originated.....:bookworm::cigar:

Funny you should say that, its an OBVIOUS derivative...S. cal is clearly the closest relative, still bearing the feathers of its distant kin, the African buffalo owl).

This is TWH, right??

^ ^^ Alphabetically Coded Reminder Of Names You Misremember

Any updates @magneto? Is this still happening to your spider? Maybe it's just another stretch motion? Let me know when I can uncross fingers/toes for you. :cat:

Oh it stopped not long after i started this thread. I just didn't want to disturb since you guys seemed to enjoy yourselves so much. :p

I have no idea what it was though. I have never seen a tarantula do this. Not in my care nor in reports from others. So as far as I know this is the only known case of rythmic tarantula hiccups. Henceforth known as RTH.

The Watering Hole

Its where banter such as this actually belongs....shame on me.:bag:
Yeah, shame on you. if there is one thing I cannot stand, it is somebody posting off-topic goofs in these forums! i was just thinking about that very thing while I was making a sandwich. Our local grocery store had run a pretty good sale on roast beef so I picked up a pound. I like to put on either some horseradish mustard, or horseradish sauce, depending on what I have on hand. You know, I'm gonna have to look up "horseradish", I've wondered if horses like it, or if there is another less obvious reason for it to be called that. Of course, horses eat a lot of stuff I guess. I don't think they vary their diet as much as goats, though. Goats even eat poison ivy, you know. Makes me kind of want to have a goat, I have a lot of poison ivy that takes over and I really pay a price if I get it on me. I think there are shots one can get, but I won't even get a flu shot. I hate needles. Hasn't been too bad a flu season so far though, so maybe I've dodged a bullet this season without getting the shot. We'll see.
Syringes can be handy for filling small water containers for tarantulas.
Anyway, knock off the off-topic stuff, nobody wants to read that. Follow my example and post handy tips like using a syringe for filling watering bowls and don't junk up the forum!
