sorry to hear ya gettin bit

if you do keep indeed keep them I suggest you invest in 12" forceps and use them to remove dead, move water dish, etc. and dont forget to reply a post in the bite forum, and btw you are pretty lucky you are 6'0 and 150 lbs any smaller it could have worst symptoms, aint fun getting bit. I was bitten by 2 in the past year and half
the first one was a juvie Poecilotheria Ornata "not fun" I rode out the symptoms if it was an adult probably have worst consequences
the second was a haplopelma minax "the bite area was sore thats all"
just remember symptoms vary from person to person.

I guess im fine now, just extremely tired all the time for no reason, my muscles ache a little, mainly my arms and legs. Anyway, i'm looking to breed now, I just got a huge female P. cambridgei in, can;t wait to find a male.

Maybe I'm missing something but you never said you knew for sure if the tarantula bit you. You said that it just dropped on you and ran off, and had no pain at the time. A 4" tarantula's fangs would certainly make noticible marks on your hand if it bit you, not to mention alot of pain the instant it bit you. The fangs would probably be 0.5" inches long on a 4" tarantula. How did you not feel it bite you? Just curious.

I read somewhere that T. bites were very discreet, and the smyptoms might not show up until a half hour later or more. In my case they did that, went away, and came worse after the venom worked its wasy around my system I guess. And I also read a report(i think in the bites forum) of a Chilean Rose (Grammostola rosea) biting someone after the person held it in the petshop. The person didnt know it bit him/her until he was leaving the petshop and seen blood from two holes in his/her hand. So I guess you cant really feel things like that until you see them, but T's do have very sharp needle like fangs.

BTW, seems kinda scary now that I think about it, that a T's venom affets the heart and all. Were there ever any studies done with T. venom? Are they neurotoxins or hemotoxins or something?

Nope. Nuh uh. You will not get me to own an Ornamental. Oh and I recommend you get yourself to a hospital ASAP.

on one hand you are living with your parents and should respect what they want...on the other hand what i would do is keep telling them you're trying to find someone to buy them until they eventually forget about it :D

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think that telling you to get rid of your tarantulas and everything else because of a bite incident is very naive, ignorant, and very old fashion. It is like forbidding you to drive after a ticket or an accident. If it means that much to your parents about a bite, they should have forbid you to not get tarantulas before you got them. There are risks to everything. If you stop doing something each time you have a single bad experience with it, you will run out of things to do in your life and will end up a loser.
Do keep in mind that his parents didn't even KNOW he had tarantulas because he had mislead them into thinking he had beetles. ;)

I do understand where the parents are coming from. Even with insurance, hospital bills can cost a pretty penny. They probably don't want to be in a position where there may be future trips to the hospital for another T bite. Besides, they're probably worried about their child (How old is Pokey anyway??? I'm guessing at least 16) and they think having critters that can cause this kind o damage to their son is not a smart thing to do.

Likewise, my husband tolerates my spider habit. I've got a few nasties though the majority of what I have are the more docile species. I don't handle my nasties either and I'm very careful about dealing with them. My husband also says if I'm ever bitten to the point a hospital trip is needed, I will need to part with my critters too. Luckily, the only bite I've had so far is from a 1/4 inch geniculata who decided my finger was yummy and I FELT it! It was like getting a shot at the doctor's office. It seems weird someone could get bitten by 4 inch critter and not FEEl it, especially when I felt a 1/4 inch critter bite me. :?

i have been reading up on allergic reactions and bites and stings and such. just wanted to let you know that the reaction your heart had (the fast beating and such) was probably your bodies natural way of speeding the venom along through your system so that it could be disposed of. this reaction is common of people with high metabolics rates. it is one of the many reasons that some people are allergic to bee stings. i would agree that you need some long tweezers. also be careful of cuts and scrapes on your hands if the T bit into an already open area this could be a better target for increased sensitivity. i would not recommend self medicating or not going to the hospital some allergic reactions can occur after symptoms have subsided within the first fifteen hours of introduction to the bloodstream.

I was thinking maybe your heart pounding and heavy breathing possible high blood pressure would be more from a panic attack then the bite itself. I would think the bite would affect the muscles cramping and such more then the pounding racing heart effect. I know one time I thought I was bitten and started to have a very rapid, pounding heart and very high blood pressure just because I started to panic. When it turned out I was not bitten at all. silly me heheh

Actually, it's been reported more than once that Stromatopelma venom does cause heart complications. Since Heteroscodra venom is at least thought to be very similar, it sounds reasonable that the Hetero venom itself caused the chest pain in this case.
After all, these are among the hottest T's available in the hobby. Actually, based on what bite reports I've read, Steve may have been very lucky to not have suffered even worse systemic effects.

Here's a bite report on Stromatopelma. I know it's not the same genus in this case but again, they are considered to be very similar.

Actually, I think it was roaches he mislead his dad in to believing were tropical beetles.

I think he said his dad never liked him having T's.

Ok, you're right. I either misread it or misunderstood it. Thanks for clearing it up. :)
