Well, It molted about a week ago, looked skinny so I thought i'd feed it. A lobster roach nymph molted into adulthood while in there, and the T. wasn't interested in it whatsoever. So I thought i'd take it out and put it in with my begging of a colony to help the breeding. Before I got it out (wasn't paying attention to the spider, unusual for me) it dropped on my hand from the top of the cage and quickly ran off. I got the lobster roach out a couple minutes later. At 8:30pm. eastern time in the usa. At 9:00 My hand started hurting but is fine now. Nows my visions blurry all of a sudden and the back of my head hurts i dont know what to do, i feel real funny, please reply quick,
Steve

hmmm......
Heteroscodra has a very nasty bite.
You might want to go to the hospital and get checked out or something.

Hi,

Get off of the computer and call your doctor!!!!! :?

If you are having any kind of trouble breathing or any chest pains, then you should have someone take you to the hospital.

Do NOT drive yourself!

Feel Better! :)

Steve-

Good luck, hope you recover quickly. Fill us in when you get back. Take care, bud. Also, buy some long tweezers.

I agree. Give us more info as soon as possible.

If you can, write down your symptoms in a journal.

I rather doubt that you'll die, but you could contribute much to the hobby. I've never seen an H. maculata bite report, and a 4" specimen is worth noting. Write down as much as possible, then let us know when you get better.

I don't even know why I'm posting this, since you're probably already at the hospital.

But if you aren't already at the hospital, take notes. It is important that hobbyists get as much information as possible on the effects of the venom of common species.

And yeah, I hope you'll be okay (which I'm sure you will be). Even if the bite would otherwise have been fatal, I'm betting that doctors can keep you alive until the venom passes from your system.

Well, i'm fine now besides various aches and pains, I'll let you guys know what happend then i'll post a bite report.

Anyway, the bite happened at 8:30 pm. I was taking a roach out and for once wasn't paying any attention to the spider which was at the top of the cage. While in the process of getting the lobster roach out it fell off the top of the cage on my hand and it ran off. Wasn't sure if it bit me or not, so I got the roach out after a few more minutes.

9:00pm. I'm feeling pains in my hand, and my fingertips are tinglng. It hurts alittle but not bad or anything.

10:00pm. The pain in my fingers and hand is gone, I thought everything was over.

12:10am. I was on the computer, at arachnopets.com:) and all of a sudden my eyes got blurry and my heart started beating very very hard and fast. I thought it was going to pop, it was amazing really.

1:00am. (At the hospital)I'm feeling pains in my head, feels like the veins are pulsating, like they are beating too hard for them to be able to handle, like a pressure type of hurt. It spread from the back of my head around to my temples.

1:30am. Talking to the nurses and one didn't like this type of stuff but was very interested, one was afraid of anything that crawles, and one was from arizona and was used to scorpians(a little off track I know).

2:53am. The doctor called us back, he said tarantulas aren't very venomous and the bites are nothing to worry about (Then I told him what I knew about Poecilotheria and Stromatopelma, aparently Heteroscodra has similar affects to Stromatopelma) he shrugged it off and mentioned histamine (well, I did as he was talking slow so I finished his sentence). He wrote me off and sent me home.

3:30am. Back at home. The pains are virtually gone.

11:30pm. next day. My index finger on my left hand is very sore(I wonder why?).

Thats about it.

It only must have bit me in a fraction of a sec. and the effects were pretty bad. I don't want to think about a 6in. H. maculata holding on! Apparently you can't be allergic until you get bit before and the histamine weakins your system. I just see it as a learning experience :} . I think I should note that despite my parents yelling their asses off at midnight I did stay calm through the whole experience. I'm 6'2" and 150 lbs. Now my parents want me to get rid of all my T's, scorps, and roaches (which my dad was never properly informed, told him they were big beetles from south america;) . My mom said I can keep my pedes. But get rid of everything! Ha! Well, maybe the togos for free, lol. I have the 4in. one that bit me, a 3 1/2in. and a 6in. that won't eat, is very skinny and has a tumor type growth at the end of the top of the abdomen. All wc, i've had them for 4-6months, and are free if you pay $7 priority shipping, just pm me if you want them.

Well, thats about it,
Steve

Personally, I'd keep them :p

If that pede bites you, it'll probably hurt just as bad. Why get rid of the Togos when you have other animals that can do nearly the same?

But if you do decide to get rid of them, I'd be willing to take them off of your hands.

I PMed you, but your box is full.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think that telling you to get rid of your tarantulas and everything else because of a bite incident is very naive, ignorant, and very old fashion. It is like forbidding you to drive after a ticket or an accident. If it means that much to your parents about a bite, they should have forbid you to not get tarantulas before you got them. There are risks to everything. If you stop doing something each time you have a single bad experience with it, you will run out of things to do in your life and will end up a loser.

I agree with Iam.... it's really a learning experience, to completely get rid of the T's just adds to other people's (parents specifically) ignorance of the hobby... yeah, bad things happen, but you learn from your mistakes.

I said it was a learning experience, but my dad in particular is very stubbern, hates inverts, and we don't get along at all. I don't want to get rid of anything, but i'm not going to be using the togos for breeding or anything. I'll just ignore my parents, there is no way i'm going to get rid of my whole collection, lol.

I don't know how old your are, but as a parent, I would tell you that I hope you have learned your lesson and will be more careful from now on. I would approve of you keeping all of your species and encourage you to learn all you could... about them and FROM them.

Getting rid of the offending T is not going to solve or change anything in my opinion.

Iam, you'll make a good parent some day!!!
