40 gal too big for M. Balfouri communal?

I recently got a nice Exo Terra 40 gal front open enclosure. Thoughts on using it for an M. Balfouri communal? Is it too big? If I were to use it, how many would be enough for them not to establish separate territories and be able to live peacefully?

These have never been reported to be communal in the wild, and in captivity there is reported cannibalism- I have a great pic of that!!

So you’re willing to risk another animal’s life over something for you, ie no benefit to the T?

Seriously think about this captive approach, and why your needs are more important than another animal’s life.

Previously I have raised slings up to juvies communally without issue but having more experience and knowledge with Ts now, I would not reccomend it. If you want to get a taste of it, breeding and leaving hatched slings with the mom for a bit can be interesting to observe. But beyond that phase I'd say still better to separate them before they get to adulthood.

If you're looking to put something in a 40gal breeder that's probably too large for any Ts. Unless you had an absolutely massive Theraposa sp or something similar. But even then the amount of soil you'd have to put it so it's not too much height in the enclosure. Maybe a good tank to use for a reptile or roach colony? Snakes (not all but some) and roaches are equally low maintenence compared to tarantulas. Assassin bugs are also fun to keep and I think do fine communally. 40gal would be enough room for a very large colony of them.

THANK YOU FOR BEING SO HELPFUL❣❣❣ I have 21 Ts of all ages now, but never had any reptiles. An assassin bug colony sounds so cool!! I have never even heard of that before. I’ll look into all of this, maybe it’s time for my first snake. THANK YOU AGAIN♥

Lol you're good! Don't worry about it.

That's Viper's approach but dont take it personally. He's a good dude.

You're always welcome here.

Checkout colubrids like corn snakes, king snakes, milk snakes. Some of them don't get huge , could probably keep them in a 40gal breeder their whole life. And they should be more active than ball pythons. The heat requirements are pretty simple. Just always use a thermostat with any heating element you get.

But assassin bugs are really cool too. I would like to get more again someday

It’s better to get a pet then decide the cage then to get it vice versa. The debate is here
I know, my coworker gave me this enclosure for free and I took it without a plan :/

Also that thread is insane LOL. I had no idea M. balfouri communals were so controversial here (as made obvious by my initial post😣)

my fault gang 😣
no fault. Youre allowed to think for yourself and have you ideas. You will research and will come Up with your own opinion.

40 gallon is big. maybe it would work with very few m balfouris. Of course, youll have to manage a lot, if breeding happens. But if all the slings are female, then that wouldnt happen.

i like to think outside the box. And i dont follow the rules: i experience them.

You can also house a leopard gecko in a 40 gallon or larger, and honestly a lot of reptiles would be very happy in a 40 gallon. Snakes are awesome though, my mom has one and he’s a goofball.

I think I’m gonna go for a leopard gecko or a skink of some kind. I wish I could get a snake, but when I asked, my partner as well as my mother all the sudden were deathly afraid of them 😣
