So, did anyone else see this in the news recently?

I mean it does say 2008 but, yea this is the first I have heard of it

Poecilotheria metallica

Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(iii) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2008
Assessor/s: Molur, S., Daniel, B.A. & Siliwal, M.
Reviewer/s: Spector, S. & Mason, T. (Terrestrial Invertebrates Red List Authority)
Contributor/s:
Justification:
The habitat where the species occurs is completely degraded due to lopping for firewood and cutting for timber. The habitat is under intense pressure from the surrounding villages as well as from insurgents who use forest resources for their existence and operations. It is assumed that the area of habitat has decreased over the years, but there is definitely a decline in quality of habitat for the spiders who seek cavities and deep crevices in old growth forests. This species is categorized as CR because of its range restricted to less than 100 km², single location and continuing decline in habitat quality.

P. nallamalaiensis Rao et al., 2006 = P. formosa Pocock, 1899 (Gabriel, 2010: 13).

Yep, they're up to date! ;)

This thread might interest you. Clicky.

You would think the people adding them to the endangered list or purposing to add them to CITES would do just a tad more research.

It is unfortunate that any theriphosidae is endangered. Thrigmopeous truculentes was one of my first spiders, VERY awesome. I know there are a few old timers in here who still have these. PLEASE breed if you can............I know there are limited specimens.

Wow that tarantula is a beaut. It looks like a cross between a C. pentalore and a M. balfouri.

I never heard of pokies being called parachute spiders, but its sad to see that they are so endangered. And I was suprised to see a fungus on the list, but I guess it deserves its place.
