Very neat ! Colony’s sound cool 😎.
my tarantulas don’t really do much tbh , but they are always on display (some hide during premolt )… :ninja: but I’m sure you’ve kept plenty of them and mygs. It’s hard keeping a big collection you must be busy.. what I’ve got right now I can easily deal with ...
...just a bizarre combination of all the best aspects of other arachnid orders with very few downsides. For the most part, they:
- are social/communal like mites
- glow under UV like scorpions
- have the absurd visual variety of true spiders
- have the general durability/resilience of...
...after hatching. So I’ll just go with that for now. Once they molt and start dispersing, I’ll probably just rehouse Mom & let the slings stay communal for a bit. If it looks like it’s not working out, I’ll separate them sooner. I’ll offer the slings springtails at first, see how it goes, and...
...of all sizes marching round in there everyday.)
Should I catch her some friends out of my garden once I move her? I have read these are communal but was frightened to put anything in with her due to her being missing so many legs, I was frightened incase others would pick on her.
Will...
...to work out how to house and what to feed her , today's mission is to research their life cycle. I know they only live a year, they are communal, and food wise they will eat anything regardless if its live or dead, and the sp I have is invasive to the uk.
But by the time I found out exactly...
I dont think issues with mature males count against the communal. In a non-confined area, those would naturally move along to find other satellite groups as mature males naturally would want to do....this natural behavior would also prevent, or at least significantly limit inbreeding...the...
I was just about to bring that exact spider up. Richard Stewart did a podcast with a lady that has been keeping them communal for a long time and they discussed in depth about communals. I have to admit it was interesting to listen to, although it never did change my mind about attempting it...
My experiences are the same. I had a fairly large communal...over time the males matured and were sent off.....which is almost certainly what would happen to a wild communal, as the desire to roam and search is strong in mature males. I also kept many solo, and they all were poor eaters...
...way the mother takes care of the babies and feeds them. as they grew older, observation shown interactions between them. They don't even need a crowded tank. You can put 5 slings in an enclosure, and they will all end up in the same burrow.
It's not farfetched either, there are communal spiders.
You can look through @Blue Jaye posts and threads, lots of info on success and growth rates with balfoui communal. I have personally had 3 different communal with 100% success rate. The ones I kept separate didn't eat as good. They WILL share food, which is unusual for any other species. I would...
So back to my original statement of why we decided to stop with the communal we had going for over two years. As I said as they grew and matured we had to remove most of the males because they would pester the females that was not interested in breeding at that time.
I know someone that has been...
I know there are lots of skeptics and I agree, there has been lots of reports where they've attempted to house this species in a communal set up and failed. However, we cannot ignore the fact that they have been kept successfully in the mentioned set up.
To completely ignore the many success...
there are a lot of people with long term communals that have been successful.....for every failure there's probably dozens of success stories. I know someone who has been keeping many communals since they were introduced....very long term, and has had no issues. You can ask where's the proof...
Yeah I was skeptical but if less die from natural causes then in a communal I guess it’s a success. I really think this thread is asking for proof of a successful set up.
I said this earlier in the thread.
Others say there a true communal but we’res there proof ?
I’ve never tried it so I’m just...
...for a few molts, then start separating. Is that okay for this species? Should they be separated from the mother immediately? Can they be communal for a molt or two? I have springtail cultures going, so I’m guessing that’s probably the only prey small enough for them. And finally, she has been...
...that it is not a good idea to try and attempt it in the first place!
We should know shouldnt we 😎
I mean its tragic for the animals when communals fail because unlike in nature they are forced into this situation unnaturally. But if more potential communal failures were documented on AB it...
Yeah it’s risky , most people who set up communal bred them first . Usually the ones that fail we never hear back from the user they vanish. 🫥
Others say there a true communal but we’res there proof ?
