I was at the San Jose Reptile Show on June 22 and was curious to see if any of the booths had Amblypygi, one of my favorite arachnid orders. I stopped by Reptilemania's booth and was surprised to see that despite their somewhat small variety of inverts, they indeed had Amblypygi.
I decided to buy one, a large Phrynus whitei. However, the care for the animal was completely inadequate as the enclosure (not even a holding tank) was too dry and did not have appropriate surfaces for molting. The animal seemed quite ill, but I bought it nonetheless due to the price.
It is currently recovering, and I am confident that it will make it. I just wish that Reptilemania had done a bit more research before taking the amblypygids in, especially considering how they were some of their few invertebrate offerings.
I will say that the staff were very kind and friendly, though. They also had a good assortment of healthy looking reptiles, so I will give them credit for that.
