Idiommata silverback female, freshly molted. she ran straight onto my hand and up my arm. These are basically an Australian substitute for a new world tarantula
I don't see how these arent a tarantula. They can climb glass, have shiny rainbow feet, are fairly large, the males live a reasonable length of time and dig as well as eat, and most significant of all they can stridulate at a high frequency, sometimes noticeable to human ears depending on the species
@Fox402 unknown. What may come as a surprise to people is that the majority of Aussie spiders are harmless. My guess is their venom has similar properties to a tarantula, they are so placid though it would be harder to actually get bitten and find out
@RezonantVoid Yeah I was wondering if it was medically significant since it's a trapdoor and many of the Aussie ones seem to be. Regardless, I'd love to have one of those, plus one of each of the venomous ones!
@Fox402 no Aussie traps are deadly surprisingly, just our funnelwebs, mouse spiders and Redbacks which out of our roughly 2300 arachnids make up a rather small percentage (31 funnelwebs, 3-5 mouse spiders and I think a handful of redback species).
My mission is to acquire H.Formidabilis, which currently is the world's deadliest spider to my knowledge
@RezonantVoid I guess I always assumed funnelwebs and trapdoors being the same thing, but obviously not when I think about it! Thanks for the education!
@Fox402 no worries at all. By the way you can actually get silverbacks from the same family (Barychelidae) outside Australia, they are rare but still around
