A. anax or hentzi cant tell from pic (i still dont think there is a real diffeance lol ) Burnet has anax, not sure about hentzi. All i have seen there was anax i believe.
What makes you say it's a mature male? Most Aphonopelma sp. mature males are darker. Most getting an almost black color with a nearly red abdomen. It looks like one of the dozens and dozens of A. hentzisthat we found in Oklahoma.
BTW... Gloves aren't really needed with these guys. They're layed back.
I'd agree it looks like a hentzi and I don't see any hooks or enlarged palps (See left palp esp). Don't know how it came to you but it could be tired of fending for itself. If you have other T's I'd say give it a home and LOTS of crickets! LOL If not, feed it anyway and then let it go. Either way the little critter is blessed to have found you. gook Luck!
Although those aren't really defensive spiders, wearing the gloves was a smart thing to do. It's a good precaution if you don't know what species it is.
Although I don't see any verifiable hooks or emboli in the picture, the way this spider is built gave me the instant impression of "maleness". The smallish abdomen (I know, could be due to starvation or dehydration) and the long, almost gangly, legs said male to me as soon as I saw the picture. As for Aphonopelma males being darker, I've had several different species: chalcodes, moderatum, hentzi. Some of them get really dark, almost black and others the coloring is nearly the same as the female. Also, there's no telling what that spider looks like when it's not under a bright camera flash.
As for the gloves, it probably wouldn't protect you against a bite, but it would save your hands from any urticating hairs that might be kicked off by an unhappy hand guest.
