The typically used hinges are weak and have too much play in them. The larger hinges have a small amount of resistance to them and no slop. I only program .002 kerf into the cuts so I can hand fit the lids after they are glued. You don't really even need a hasp then things fit correctly they will snap shut on their own.
It is only a fifty cent difference to have the heavy duty hinges. They are easily twice as durable.
