So I got these Avics in which came in as Avicularia variegata but they look like normal A. Avicularia to me. Is there any way to tell them apart easily? The Juvenile is about 2 3/4” and the smaller one is about 1 1/2”
No deciphering differences can be seen in this pic other than some varying coloration differences at this size IMO. A. variegata keep some of the sling abdominal pattern under the gaurd setae into adulthood (besides males, they lose it completely upon their ultimate molt). The slings of variegata also have abdominal patterns that are a bit more crisp or defined than any Avicularia avicularia that I have ever seen. Now, the picture could certainly be misleading me but raising a number of both species, Id have to say this is more likely a variant of Avicularia avicularia. However, there is a way to eliminate either/or if you're handy with a ruler. Avicularia avicularia Leg I (front set of legs) is 10% shorter than Leg IV (hind set of legs). Whereas, variegata those legs are all roughly the same length.
