Good to read you too!
I didn't keep any this year (sadly the hard frosts have come through... without spiders to look for, this is my boring season:( ). Actually, I didn't see any this year in their normal spot (a stand of river birch beside a pond at work). In fact, I thought I wasn't...
Amazing photos as always!
Beautiful!
Here is a male scorpionfly I found in Central Virginia. Sorry for the fuzziness; only got one photo before he flew off. Always on the look out for another one, but they are hard to come by. Next time, I hope to find one with prey...
Finally found this link. What a timely article for this.
Once again, I don't like folks portraying these guys as monsters that might be a threat to people, but at least they mention Gamera!

In a way, common snappers have some traits (especially their knobby tails) that can make them look more like an alligator than an alligator snapper. They can also be quite variable in appearance, leading to some...
We also have purse webs around, but I've never found one. That is one I'd reallly like to see. I've even had dreams about finding them! I wake up all happy for a moment before I realize it didn't happen:mad:
:) It has been a pretty good year for spiders thus far. A couple of weeks ago...

Don't see them for sale much anymore since importation stopped a couple of years back. Check out the classifieds at Kingsnake.com; they crop up there from time to time...
Milksnake (Pueblan I think). Sooo not from your area. Lucky the little guy ended with you!
We have one at work that was found in the parking lot of an urban mall in Virginia. Weird.

As for why they are not good first hots, their venom is MUCH worse. Also, their disposition is more defensive, but that is a topic of debate. In my experience, that is quite true.
Here...
Yes, it is. Definitely NOT a good beginner hot. Best to let it go soon and carefully.
If you eventually are ready for a copperhead, there are many CB available, cheaply.

After one of our parties, I found a big bottle of cheap vodka someone had left behind. I hate vodka for drinking, but it sure works great for molts. Molt is totally pliable in just a few moments.
Rubbing alcohol works great too, but oddly enough, I don't have any of that laying around ;)...

Yeah, is that pic new or did I not see it the first time:?
Little hard to tell, but it looks like it might be coming from the cloaca area, but it looks a lot messier than any prolapse I've seen-not sure what to think. Almost seems like some shredding is going on. Is that skin flap above it...
Depends... if it is a hemipene, than yes it should. If it is an injury from a car, predator, etc. it may have some internal damage that could kill it. That being said, I have seen snakes make full recoveries from some pretty horrendous injuries (in one case, ribs and intestines exposed on a...
Does it seem to be coming out of the cloaca? If so, it could be a prolapsed hemipene (which is treatable). Whatever the case, you can call around to local wildlife rehabbers, often they have contact with vets that will work on injured wildlife pro bono.
Good Luck
Edit: the sustrate...
They usually spend the vast majority of time in shrubs doing their best impersonation of a vine (when hunting they will often do a waving motion that resembles a vine moving in the wind). IME they need good ventilation and a lot of structure (lots of sticks, plants (pothos) etc). A daily mist...
