I'm starting to grow quite fond of the sound. I used to listen to ambient music at night when I was trying to get into gnostic states of mind, now I have my crickets. What better ambience then real nature?
Yup its a racer and to think I got bitten by one while in the woods a few months back. I guess the name is a misnomer when it comes to the juvenilles of the species.
Will do, btw, I was just looking through a florida snake identification guide and I can't find this little bugger anywhere, I guess I will check for other areas.
I caught this snake on the side of the highway since I knew it was inevitable that it would get hit soon so I decided to rear it. I had snakes before but they were a baby corn snake and a ball python both of which feed on mice. The problem with this guy is that he is pretty small and I doubt he...
It is REALLY tiny. It is about the size of your thumbnail. It is full black, I can't get pictures now, the snake I caught was wild and pretty aggressive. I've got a soft spot for wounded animals and I took it in. I'll try to get pics ASAP
I bought some soil for a snake I had caught the other day. I put some coco coir into the soil and mixed it up real nice. I look into the enclosure today to make sure that the snake has been eating the crix and I found a little millipede in the soil. I'd be kinda cool to rear it, anyone have some...
Well I'm quite new to Entomology and I just recently found out about different ways to catch insects and I wanted to try out the Pitfall Trap method. I figured that I'm not the only person with questions on how to catch insects with different techniques so I started this thread as almost a...
I want some beetles soooo bad. I have some adult badister beetles that I found but I can't find ANY information on how to raise them, two of them died... I guess it is a good way to start learning how to pin.
Hey I can't upload pictures now since I am at a library and they block flashdrives and peripherals to be attached to the computers but I believe I have caught some Dicaelus dilatatus here in Orlando, Fl. In a lot of the pictures I see they have black legs but the ones I have seem to have brown...
Even with a screened lid adding some moist perlite to the substrate or in the false bottom of the tank will up the humidity. I used to use perlite when growing mushrooms so I know this works.
I doubt that they are "contaminated" in any way though I'm not sure he would survive very long as they usually already have a burrow established and such, he is at a disadvantage since he is starting later on than most.
I'm pretty sure that this ID is right, there is a link for the picture of what I suspect to be a Yellow-striped Armyworm Moth (Spodoptera ornithogalli) below

I was outside looking at my mushroom patch and garden when I noticed this caterpillar. It is jet black but has a yellowish lining along its back. I saw it opening its mouth a few times which really shocked me since I had never seen any caterpillar do that. Here are some pics
A more close...
I fear "Miss Velvet" will die soon. I thought she was a leaf cutter so I didn't feed her. It is the second day that she has a dish with honey and a dish with diluted maple syrup but she still refuses to eat. To raise the humidity I gently misted her container, she didn't like that much..... I...
This is going to prove interesting. On a side note Miss Velvet (her new name) "hissed" at me not to long ago while I was putting in some diluted maple syrup into the encasement. Scary to hear such a loud noise from such a small creature.
Lol I meant like under which conditions, signs of mating, ect. By your post do you mean that you don't have any Cow Killers up there? Since I am still a noob when it comes to rearing insects I wouldn't mind giving you my cow killer...
This is good for the larvae but what about getting the breeding to actually happen? We must come together and make a definitive "Dasymutilla occidentalis care guide"
