I'm still living at home with my mother, as she's got hip displaysia (or however you spell it) and needs my help around the house.
At first, her answer was not only 'no' but 'HELL no'. I just jumped the gun one day and brought home a big old G. rosea. Once she saw that it never smelled, made noise, or left any kind of mess outside the cage, she was sold.
As long as they don't bother her and she doesn't have to touch them, she's okay with it.
I was 12 and I had been watching a lot of videos of them on youtube and thought it would be neat so i gave the idea to my mom. I said, "What I'm about to ask you may seem crazy, and please don't say no, but let me give you the facts and let you think about it, and trust me, it's not as bad as it's going to seem. But I want a pet tarantula..." She actually took it well once I told her they werent dangerous and gave her the facts, which is suprising because she doesn't listen to ANYONE.
yeah i didnt ask i just got them. I mean i see where that would cause a problem with the younger crowd, best advice is to do your homework and get the facts, and tell her them.
Like how they arent just very mean giant spiders who's only purpose on life is to bite the crap out of humans.
Or how the venom isnt going to kill you.
and so on and so forth.
I just kept telling them these cool facts about tarantulas, and talked to them about the care every now and then. Eventually my dad started to take an interest in them because he started to see how cool they are, and then he started really wanting one. My mom is still deathly scared of them, but it was 2:1 so my side eventually won, and now I have three
She's starting to warm up to them too, now that she sees they aren't screaming banshees of hell (hence why I didn't get an OBT right away lol) and that they're pretty chill, and she's starting to take an interest in them too.
Whatever you do don't get one without your parents permition, if they find it and your not home your most likely coming home to a dead tarantula. Figure out what speices you want and research it and print out several caresheets (I'd suggest picking a more docile species for your parents ease of mind.) Save up money so you can pay for it yourself and make sure your keeping up with your chorse and even do a few extra that isn't asked of you ( do this for a few weeks it shows responsibility.) Also depending on how old you are I'd say if your under 15 write up a short contract stating if you fail to maintain the animal properly that you will willing rehome the animal so the responsibilty will not fall on your parents. Don't whine or cry or bug, if they say no just give them the caresheets and say " Please just take your time to consider it' and continue keeping up with your chorse with out being asked. Chances are if you don't bug them and continue to keep up with your responsabilities they will reconsider and give in.
I got lucky aparently my first pet was a wc tarantula that i came walking into the house holding when was 3, as the story is told my dad tryed taking it away and I cryed well needless to say she was with me till I was 8 and she passed away.
I've had tarantulas on and off over the yrs but had been tless for 3 yrs untill this last weekend, convincing your fiance to get a tarantula is a whole other topic and much more difficult then any parent.
My dad was super stoked when i got my first T, a G. rosea from the LPS . My mom wasnt too thrilled, and as my collection grows i can convince her that little slings dont take up very much space
I asked my mom for a fish and she said no. I then asked her for a tarantula and she said yes. Apparently she thought I'd lose interest in a week or so....two months after the first i brought home another.
I would suggest that you get some info on enclosures as well. An "escape proof" enclosure will go a long way in helping ease your Mom's mind I think My Mom was kewl with my snake as long as she didn't ever see it and knew it couldn't find it's way downstairs. AFter that, a tarantula was no problem.
As a parent now, my son's first pet was a T when he was 7. She just passed away last year when he was 16.
Wasent That hard for me because my dad n me were already big time into reptiles and yes i love reptiles but ever since i was little 7,8 yars old i would spend everyday bug hunting and my dad started getting surprised that they didnt just live for one or two days and died in the jar i had a little wolf spidr for over a year then on my 12 birthday me and my dad were in mrytle beach and we ended up going into this little rinky-dink petshop and saw my g.rosea and fell in love only 20$ my dad said "hes cool huh?" i said "yeh!"
and he bought it for me and that was the star of well as of tommrow my b-day a 5 year hobby

And still my mom pressures me to get rid of everything and switch to golf : (
Well, it all started when my mom's brother, who used to breed boas and pythons, brought home a G. rosea as a "thank you" for being the ring bearer at his wedding... And here we are =)
