You know those animals that are so common in the wild that they're rare in captivity?

They're really more interesting than you might think. I've always kept Woodhouse's Toads, but lately I've been capturing (what I believe to be) Rough Earth Snakes, watching them eat for a few days, and releasing them. It's really neat to see what goes on right in your backyard.

You guys probably appreciate every bit of nature already, though.

Anyway, here's a small picture of one of the Virginia striatula. Let me know if you have any information about them.

Nice looking little snake. I think it's just as fun to have the more common species as many of the more exotic ones. As soon as it warms up a bit more I'm going to round up a couple Prairie ringneck snakes. They're a dime a dozen around here but they're fun to have around.

I'd like my backyard a lot more if there were snakes in it.

Typically, canine waste is all I have to look forward to collecting.

only snakes around here I've seen were garters, though I do love them their just boring.... unless it comes to breeding them, but thats only because their live bearers

I see the same old snakes around here that I've been seeing all my life: Garters, ribbons, water snakes, the occasional Dekay's and redbelly. I can count the total number of Eastern milk, smooth green and black racers I've come across on one hand. Eastern hognoses are in this area, but I've only seen them south of where I live. Supposedly timber rattlers and black rats occur here too, but the rattlers are endangered, and I've never seen a black rat.

Right in the heart of Bensonhurst we have a ........{drum roll}

raccoon! And an occasional hawk hits our birdfeeder during migration.

yeah like bats. of the 900+ species, second only to rodents in mammals, none of them are in the pet trade, even though mot are very common. occasionally you'll see some wacko claiming to sell "egyptian fruit bats" and the like on fauna classifieds....
