I realize how difficult it is if not impossible to id a tarantula by a picture i still feel compelled to get everyones best guess, i figure its either a H. minax, or S. javaensis, being that they are the only two completely black asians i can think of. A little background, it is definitely asian, it came from beijing, and it is BIG, full grown female from what i can gather, without further ado, her are the pics...

and another

and one more

any help is greatly appreciated.
cheers

Very funny guys :) but do we have any serious replies, what about ornithoctonus hainana, the only previous experience i have with asians is H. lividum, and H. sp. longipendum (a.k.a. Cyriopagopus paganus) any info or potential id would be appreciated,
cheers

All I can say for just about 100% certain is that it is an OW spider.

You may want to do some research on Chilobrachys spp....

Assuming for a second that it is O. hainana that i have because it looks identical to my T, what are the chances of finding a male around, to go with this big girl.

Sorry for new reply, but hey Martin, is the scopulae super evident on all exemplars of the species or can some show it more than others, i recently saw a pic of yours on Voggelspinne e.V. and the scopula is insane on the chelicerae, do you think they can lose it with an upcoming molt, like the scoulae on their foot pads?
cheers

Scopula being present does not equal it being O. hainana... all members of the this subfamily have the outer surface of chelicerae covered with scopula.

If it is O. hainana they will be extremely pronounced, as you mentioned they are in Martin's photo.

Get a better picture to help clarify... but regardless it still doesn't mean it's neccessarily O. hainana... just a way to rule it out or not.

OK, i admit though in my own defence my experience with OW is very limited, this being one of only 4 OW specimens that i have kept. Ill wait for a molt and see if i can send it off to someone for ID, still dont know who that would be but regardless it is a nice T, I wish i did know what it was so i could get a male.
cheers
