I made an emergency trip to Petco (which is an hour and a half away, juuust so you know haha) for fruit flies the other day... and, of course, the first thing I did was look to see what arachnids and reptiles they had. I noticed a G. rosea climbing around on the top of the enclosure... though to myself that it was probably a mature male. It climbed down the side of the glass, and I was able to get a good view of hooks and palps... DEFINITELY a mature male. Looked at the price tag... $20. Hmmm... I have a MF G. rosea just chilling at home... molted with in the last 6 months...

:?

And I walked away from him! I decided I didn't want to deal with it lol... all those little slings, if I even got a sac. If I even got a sac and it survived.

In retrospect, maybe I should have? Good practice and whatnot lol

Congrats on the self control, but being a mature male, i would have bought him so he could have at least spend the rest of his days in good care.

Mattyb, now you're making me feel bad! lol They had another G. rosea that was huddled in the back and I couldn't get a good him at him/her. I just... can't justify buying a T from Petco, when I know it's just going to be replaced again.

Okay, that is my herois spin on it... the bigger thing is, I don't want to see the death curl :( I get so attached, and it sounds wimpy... but I'd like to prolong that for as long as possible.

If the Petco was closer, I might be talked into getting him... but I don't have the time or desire to drive an hour and a half (in a direction where I couldn't make the trip useful for multiple things lol) just to pick him up.

That's one reason i don't like buying from pet stores....they keep replacing them, and i don't want 100 G.rosea lol. Unless they happen to have a more should i say more rare or more desirable species.

I was at a LPS yesterday and they had a G.rosea in a 10gal. 1" of white sand substrate and water dish with a huge ball of cotton in it (didn't even look wet) some rocks and fake plants, and then a heat light on top not an infrared bulb, it looked like a normal light bulb, and a brick on top of the wire mesh cage lid. It had to be the most horrible setup i've ever seen, i told my girlfriend we had to leave, she asked no questions....she saw my facial expression and knew...lol.

Reminds me of a set up a friend of mine had once! It was my first time going to his house, and when I walked his room and saw a 10g I immediately ran up to it and was like, "Ooh, whatcha got!?"

Same sort of set up you described... white sand, with fish tank decorations like skulls and skeletons all over, and one of those coconut hides... but there were ATLEAST two dozen crickets in there!

I just turned around slowly and said... "Either give her to me NOW, or listen VERY carefully" LOL

More control than I would have had.
Nothing new there ;) LOL Annnnyways...

LOL Ariel... he listed VERY carefully! He had her since he was 13 (just like me and my G. rosea), and he was pretty upset to hear that he was keeping her in less than ideal conditions.. I sorta felt bad afterwards haha but he got her set up with coco fiber, some plants, and only fed her when she was hungry after that!

It doesn't sound wimpy, our MM B. albo just matured, who I adore almost as much as my dog, and I check on our guys every day about 3 times, just to make sure everything is cool and see if there were any molts or anything, and I told Mackenzie that in about 9ish months, I'm going to stop checking on Charades (the MM albo) because I don't want to find my little guy expired :( For some reason, I've had TERRIBLE luck, and every animal I've had that's died, I've been the one to find it. And Charades is the one thing I don't want to be the one to find dead, because I know that when he does go to the big web in the sky, I'm going to be a wreck.

I am the same way.. checking on them several times a day, just looking at them and seeing what's changed in their enclosures.

Did you ever consider sending him out a breeder loan, or selling him for breeding?
When my H. Sp. "Vietnam" matured male, I panicked for a bit.. then finally posted him up, because I didn't want to find him gone one day :( He lives in New York now! Though, I wasn't as attached to that T as some of my others, so I can't say what I would do if it was one of my favourites.

We've got him a lady. She's penultimate (we think) and should be going into premolt soon. He only matured at the end of September, so if after she molts, if she's not ready, we're going to send him out. I hope she'll be ready, because if we send him out, I want him back so we can preserve him in resin when he passes on.

I'm very proud of you for resisting temptation. *pats you on the head* It is something we all have to do. My worst was at a local reptile swap, this guy who normally sold snakes had this poor T blondi, in a small deli cup with dry substrate, and the poor things abdomen looked like a raisin. I told him he needed to feed and water the poor thing, and he told me that it could probably eat a a lot of pinkies and he couldn't afford to feed it that much. Plus whoever bought it could do all that. I pointed out to him if he didn't do something it wouldn't live long enough to get sold, and then he started ignoring me. The jerk. I didn't buy it though because I knew it would just encourage him to buy more and mistreat them as well. It still burns me though, that money hungry moron!!!!!!!!!!

The Petco in SR, Jason?! I have yet to see an avic at a Petco, anywhere!

I won't even talk about the T. blondi I saw at an LPS in Oregon (that they wanted $150 for)... my gawd that thing was in a medium KK (and it almost completely killed it) with no water bowl.. dry 1" substrate.. a bright light right over it.. and it looked in bad need of a molt, food, and water.. poor things :(
